Iraq and Sudan are in the news every day and we hear many opinions and
concerns about them, but few people are better qualified to provide an
enlightened viewpoint about both troubled countries than Ambassador Timothy
Carney.
During a long career in the U.S. Foreign Service, Ambassador Carney earned a
well deserved reputation for specializing in peacekeeping and stabilization in
times of unrest. Following successive assignments as the last accredited U.S.
Ambassador to Sudan and as Ambassador to Haiti, he retired from the Foreign
Service in 2000, but continues to be called upon frequently for special
assignments. In 2003 he served on the staff of Lt. Gen (Ret.) Jay Garner in Iraq
as the senior authority in the Ministry of Minerals and Industry. He was sent
back to Haiti in 2005 as Charge d'Affaires to help ensure stability during the
Haitian elections. In early 2007 he returned to Iraq as coordinator for Economic
Transition and later in the year he drew on his Sudan experience, including
travels during photography for a book on Sudan, plus a series of interviews in
order to prepare a special report on Sudan's Comprehensive Peace Agreement for
the United States Institute on Peace (http://www.usip.org/pubs/specialreports/sr194.html).
Ambassador Carney's Foreign Service career included service during time of
conflict in places such as Vietnam, Cambodia, South Africa, and Somalia, and he
was a member of several UN Peacekeeping Missions. He has also served as Director
for Asian Affairs on the National Security Council and as Principal Deputy
Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia. Since retiring and between special
assignments he has consulted with industry on crisis response in various
countries throughout the world and he has helped to prepare Army and National
Guard units for deployment to Iraq. He and his wife, Victoria Butler, also found
time to write a large illustrated book called "Sudan: The Land and the People"
and he has appeared throughout the U.S. at numerous exhibitions of photos from
the book.
Don't miss this exciting opportunity to gain an inside perspective on both
Iraq and Sudan from one of our nation's most experienced diplomats.
The event will begin with registration at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at
7:00 p.m. The formal presentation will begin during dessert at approximately 7:45 p.m. and there
will ample time for questions and discussions.
There are two entrances to the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington.
- East Gate at 1700 Army Navy Drive, Arlington, VA:
Get on Army Navy Drive between I-395 and the Pentagon City Mall, heading
west. The road turns southward a short distance west of Pentagon City. Watch
carefully for the right turn into the Army Navy Country Club. You go under
I-395 and directly through a gate with a sign saying you're entering the
Club. The road winds up the hill through the golf course. The meeting is in
the clubhouse to your left as you enter the parking area (the three-story
building behind the flagpole).
- West Gate at 2400 South 18th Street, Arlington, VA:
Via Glebe Road: Take I-395 to Glebe Road, exit and go north. Just before the
busy intersection of S. Walter Reed Drive and S. Glebe Road, make a right
turn from Glebe Road onto S. 18th Street. Almost immediately, make a hard
right, then a left, and follow S. 18th Street three blocks directly into the
Club parking lot. The clubhouse is at the far end of the parking lot, behind
the flagpole.
