Bring the best and brightest MIT students into your workplace by volunteering to be an Externship Sponsor! In these challenging economic times, we are reminded of the importance and value of coming together as an MIT community. The MIT Externship Program pairs MIT undergraduate and graduate students with alumni for job shadowing and intern opportunities over the Independent Activities Period (IAP), January 4-29, 2010. You can host an extern for one, two, or all four weeks of IAP. We are seeking alumni from a wide spectrum of professional fields who are interested in connecting with current students, increasing awareness of their companies and reconnecting with the MIT student experience. To become an externship sponsor, submit an online application at http://alum.mit.edu/externships by September 22, 2009. Sincerely, Katie Casey Maloney Associate Director, Student/Alumni Programs MIT Alumni Association 617-452-3372 Fax: 617-258-6211 externship@mit.edu http://alum.mit.edu/externships Annual
General Meeting - UK School Teacher Honoured
With 2009 MIT Inspirational Teacher Award
The Club held its AGM on 17 June. The list of officers and volunteers for the coming academic year was unanimously agreed. Linda Morecroft presented 2009 MIT Inspirational Teacher Award to Nichola Haworth or Sevenoaks School. See the News and Information webpage for more. Gifts to MIT - The MIT
Development Trust
The Club would like to bring your attention to an opportunity to enhance their gifts to MIT. The MIT Development Trust is a British Registered Charity which is designed for individuals who reside and pay taxes in the United Kingdom. If the gift is routed through the Development Trust, the Inland Revenue in the United Kingdom will permit the charity to reclaim taxes paid by the individual on the gift amount; this ultimately increases the value of charitable gifts by almost thirty percent. A few straightforward conditions apply, but it is important to note that the giver does not need to be a citizen of the United Kingdom. For information about the MIT Development Trust and how to take advantage of it, contact: Roger Gouldstone, e:mail OOAARR@aol.com , Tel: 01531 890508 Fax: 01531 890202 MIT

Membership Drive
Once again it is time to renew your membership of the Club! We have over 100 dues-paying members at present and about half of these pay by standing order. For the rest of you, however, this is a reminder that it is time to renew your subscription. There are numerous events throughout the year to go to and by keeping up your membership you help the Club support events. Previous events:- Jeremy Bentham, CEO of Shell Hydrogen, gave a seminar on Hydrogen and Fuel Cell; Sol Trujillo, CEO of Orange spoke about the Way Ahead for Wirefree Communications; Peter Goodfellow, Head of Discovery Research at GlaxoSmithKline gave an insight into the future of pharmaceutical research and drug development. In addition, in November, 2007, we had a MIT Enterprise Forum launch event with Dr. Desh Deshpande. President Hockfield also spoke at a reception at the Institute of Directors about MIT's focus on energy science and about raising MIT's profile around the world. with Current MIT Students
Alumni are Urged to Join the Institute Career Assistance Network The MIT Alumni Association’s online career assistance network, known as ICAN, can be a very valuable tool for current MIT students who are seeking career advice, summer internships, or trying to create a network of contacts for future career management. ICAN is a Web-searchable database of alumni who volunteer their time as career advisors. Alumni sign up online as career advisors, and create a profile that shares their professional interests, current job duties, past experiences, and ways in which they’d like to be in contact with both current students and alumni. Alumni are encouraged to join the Institute Career Assistance Network as career advisors by clicking the link “Sign up to be an advisor online” found at http://web.mit.edu/alum/career/ican/ “This is a great, easy way to give back to MIT,” says Tempesta. “Advice volunteers offer might provide a fellow alumnus or student significant support, and now more than ever we must nurture the network effect as an ongoing investment in the future.” Those alumni seeking career advice are also encouraged to use ICAN. Start your ICAN search today at http://web.mit.edu/alum/career/ican/. Read the full article. |
