Winning In Emerging Markets (Aug 12, 2011)
Emerging markets in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe are delivering some of the strongest revenue and profit growth for global makers of fast-moving consumer goods, despite concerns that lower prices might translate into lower profits. Emerging-market leaders like Coca-Cola, Unilever, Colgate-Palmolive, Groupe Danone and PepsiCo earn 5% to 15% of their total revenues from the three largest emerging markets in Asia?China, India and Indonesia. The story is similar in Russia and Eastern Europe, where these companies often dominate their target categories and routinely exceed internal corporate benchmarks for profitability. And the trend is likely to continue. The gross domestic product of emerging markets equaled the GDP of advanced nations for the first time in 2006, with much of the growth coming from the "BRICET" nations?Brazil, Russia, India, China, Eastern Europe and Turkey.
Until the past few years, emerging markets were a relatively low priority for the leading consumer products companies with few exceptions, even though these markets are home to about 85% of the world's population. The obstacles are still real?in emerging markets, multinationals compete on unfamiliar terrain dominated by local players, sell at price points below those in their home countries and wrestle with deep-seated social and cultural customs. But with growth slowing in the mature markets of North America, Japan and Western Europe, some consumer goods companies have figured out how to tap into the purchasing power of a new and growing middle class in these emerging markets.
We will discuss six key success factors to navigating the uncertain economic environments in developing economies: Enter the mass market to achieve scale in distribution, brand building and operations; localize at every level; develop a "good enough" cost mentality; think globally but hire locally; make sure local acquisitions have a strong business fit; and organize for emerging markets.

MIT Club of Singapore Scholarship Drive (May 12, 2011)
GIVING BACK TO MIT AND SINGAPORE
Over the past 27 years since the founding of the MIT Club of Singapore ("MITCS") under the early guidance of our founders Mr Han Vota and Mr Lim Hock San, our patron Dr Tony Tan and previous EXCO members, the club has grown by leaps and bounds. Today many of our members are industry leaders, senior civil servants, professionals and successful entrepreneurs. All MIT alumni have gone on to successful careers in their respective fields of endeavour.
The MIT Club of Singapore Scholarship ("MITCSS") is intended to assist Singaporean (incl. PR) students at MIT with their cost of living and will augment but not replace the other awards, grants and loans provided by MIT. The objective is to encourage the best and the brightest students from Singapore who by personal choice opt not to take a traditional scholarship (with its concomitant bond), to choose MIT as their institute of higher learning.
The MIT alumni draw considerable pride and prestige from being associated with this great institution and many have successfully leveraged on its prestige in their careers. Furthermore, the MIT network has been a useful platform for many alumni in their professional pursuits. We believe that the MITCS can do a small part in ensuring the continued success of this great institution by ensuring that the best and the brightest in each cohort from Singapore places MIT at the top of their choices for universities.
RAISING USD100,000 BY THE END OF THE MITCS FISCAL YEAR
With a registry of over 200 members and over 700 alumni who are currently residing in Singapore, we believe that this is a good time to embark on a scholarship endowment drive. The goal is to achieve maximum participation from all alumni as well as raise a minimum of SGD100,000 for :
1) An endowment fund (at a minimum of USD 50K equivalent) that will provide the recipient of the MITCSS with an annual stipend to subsidize his or her cost of living in Cambridge, Massachusetts and,
2) Funding of MITCS academic prizes to students at local universities to promote the goodwill of MIT.
This fund will be administered by MIT and the club will lay down the guidelines for its award. The main beneficiaries of this scholarship will be Singaporean and PR students who show great promise and potential and can potentially make a difference in Singapore and beyond.
WINNING THE MIT CLUB PARTICIPATION CHALLENGE
To kick-start this initiative the Scholarship Committee has registered the MITCS for the MIT Club Participation Challenge; the goal of this challenge is to get as many people as possible to make a contribution to MIT. The club that secures the highest percentage increase of participation from alumni gets a USD20,000 prize which will go towards part 1) of the Scholarship Fund as stated above. This competition ends on 30 June 2011 and we would like to encourage you to take part in this initiative and help the Club to win this competition. The amount contributed is not as important as the participation level, hence we would like to encourage everyone to do their part and make a contribution to this Cause however small as every person counts.

Over breakfast, Bernard Lee provided attendees a broad overview of the industry from his vantage point and how he sees it evolving. He also answered questions that attendees had regarding the industry and how businesses, market regulations and even the global economy may be shaped by their activities in the future.

The importance of realizing ideas worth spreading
On September 12, 2009 TEDxMITClubSingapore gathered four speakers with their inspiring visions for a better future and 50 guests from diverse backgrounds in an intimate venue to discover and bring into actuality ideas worth spreading.
In the spirit of TED that believes all knowledge is connected, the night witnessed a confluence of thought-provoking presenters and open-minded attendees from various backgrounds, including: computer science professor, beer brewer, cable TV channel founder, weekend busker, designer who represented Singapore at the Venice Biennale and parents of a scientific child prodigy.
TEDxMITClubSingapore was a small-scale event designed to spark and a sustain a much bigger movement in Singapore - using powerful ideas to change attitudes and actions. The theme of "The Craftsman" emphasized presenters who are doers in addition to being thinkers. Guests left the event with connections that empowers them to collaborate across disciplines and create far-reaching impact.
Volunteering with the Boys Home and Youth Workz @ Singapore Science Centre (Aug 15, 2009)
Over two days (15 and 29 August 2009), MITCS volunteers accompanied two groups of 20 secondary school youths from the Boys Home and Youth Workz to the Singapore Science Centre. The events was graciously sponsored by EMC, an IT Business solutions company.
The volunteers and students spent the morning viewing the various exhibits at the Science Centre. There were keen interactions between the enthusiastic volunteers and inquisitive students in exploring the displays. The first group from the Boys Home saw the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition, while the second group watched the movie "Sea Monsters" at the IMAX Theatre. Both days ended with some souvenir shopping at Curiosity ý The Science Centre Shop.
On both days, the volunteers left the Science Centre with warm memories of meaningful time spent with groups of lively students, whose sincere words of gratitude still ring strong in our ears long after the event is over. We look forward to more of such events in the future.
