of South Texas Seminar “MIT At Home - 2:
Energy” Cocktails-Social Hour 5:30pm University of Houston-Hilton In our second seminar presentation we will explore the energy industry. It put Houston on the map and it is still the biggest overall employer in the region. This program will consist of local MIT alumni speakers covering the full span of the industry from discovery and development to financing to delivery of the product. Richard Byrnes will discuss trends in the global oil & gas industry and the strategy and organizational challenges facing industry players. Kate Baker will sketch the oil and gas supply-demand picture and the link between GDP and energy consumption, before touching on the changing face of the oil and gas business, and some of the challenges facing attempts to bridge to sustainable development. David Johnston will go into the earth to tell us about time-lapse seismic images of oil reservoirs that are used to monitor fluid movements in the Earth's subsurface. These data can show where there is remaining oil in our existing fields, maximizing recovery with minimal environmental impact. Phil Grossweiler will bring the energy home by discussing the recent growth in the worldwide LNG industry trends and then concentrate on latest and projected activities regarding LNG imports into the U.S. Talk would cover both technology and political issues. Join us for this exciting program on Thursday, April 29, 2004 at the University of Houston Hilton. The program starts with a social hour from 5:30 to 6:30 (cash bar). The presentations will start at 6:30, with dinner and discussions to follow. Membership in the club runs coincident with the calendar year, which means that those members who paid their dues before October 1, 2003 need to renew now for 2004. Membership is open to all MIT alumni and alumnae, as well as current undergraduate and graduate students and their parents. Your dues in the local club are used to pay for mailing announcements and the newsletter, sponsor events for local high school students accepted at the Institute, award prizes at local science fairs, and improve local science and math education through our Leadership in Education Program (LEAP). Although we do benefit from some administrative assistance from the Institute, the MIT Club of South Texas does not receive funding from MIT or from the Alumni/ae Association.
