Fortune Favors the Bold: What we must do to build a new and lasting global
prosperity
World-renowned economist Lester Thurow will be featured at a luncheon at the
Houston Country Club to discuss how individuals, corporations, and nations can
prosper from globalization.
According to Thurow:
“The moral of the tale is simple. Those who want to win cannot sit on the
sidelines. They must be proactive. Others will act if they don’t and they will
be enveloped by the resulting events. They may lose if they participate, but
they will certainly lose if they do not participate. Fortune favors the
bold—even if some of the bold are numbered among the losers.”
A professor of economics and management at MIT, and former Dean of the Sloan
School of Business at MIT, Professor Thurow is the author thirteen global
bestsellers. Recent New York Times bestsellers include Head to Head, The
Zero-Sum Society, and The Future of Capitalism. His latest books are Building
Wealth and Fortune Favors the Bold. Professor Thurow was selected as one of 200
rising leaders by Time Magazine, and has served as Staff Economist on the
President’s Council of Economic Advisors, among other advisory positions. Please
join us for this rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s top thought
leaders!
Club of South
Texas Seminar
“MIT at Home - 2: Energy”
April 29, 2004
Announcing our second “MIT at Home” Seminar featuring local MIT alums who are on
the cutting edge of technology. “MIT at Home” is patterned after MIT’s
successful “MIT On The Road” Program. We recently sent out an email to local
alumni asking if anyone was interested in talking about their work and we
received a very good response.
Our second program will consist of three talks in the energy field: The energy
industry put Houston on the map and is still the biggest overall employer in the
region. Houston is the primary center for the development of new technology in
the oil industry. This program will consist of speakers covering the full span
of the industry from discovery and development to financing to delivery of the
product.
Join us for this exciting program on Thursday, April 29, 2004 at the University
of Houston Hilton.

2004 Club Membership Drive
It’s time
once again, time for the annual MIT Club of South Texas membership drive. The
MIT Club of South Texas invites you to join or renew your membership for 2004.
Membership in the club runs coincident with the calendar year, which means that
those members who paid their dues before October 1, 2003 need to renew now for
2004. Membership is open to all MIT alumni and alumnae, as well as current
undergraduate and graduate students and their parents. Your dues in the local
club are used to pay for mailing announcements and the newsletter, sponsor
events for local high school students accepted at the Institute, award prizes at
local science fairs, and improve local science and math education through our
Leadership in Education Program (LEAP). Although we do benefit from some
administrative assistance from the Institute, the MIT Club of South Texas does
not receive funding from MIT or from the Alumni/ae Association.
