Message From The President

Dear MIT Alumni, Alumnae and parents of Active students:

The MIT Alumni Club of South Texas Board and I would like to wish everyone Un Prospero Año or Happy New Year.  First, I want to thank everyone for their continued support and we hope to build upon our successful 2003, namely our first installment of MIT @ Home showcasing local area alumni/ae advances in medical technology, sponsoring Andra L. Zoller of James F. Bay Elementary School is Clear Creek ISD (who also won Texas teacher of the year honors 2003) for the LEAP program, and hosting Karl W. Reid, executive director of the MITES program.   In addition, our dining club continues to sample the variety of Houston cuisine and the revival of happy hours has been well received.

We are currently in our membership drive for 2004 and hope all alumni/ae can contribute.  We have an exciting program this year including, but not limited to the following: Our second installment of MIT @ Home focusing on the oil industry, a Homeland Security and Bio-defense Forum, 2004 LEAP nominations / selection and Institute Speaker Henry Jenkins, Director of the Comparative Media Studies Program.   This year will also include a more concentrated effort to bridge MIT Club of South Texas and the MIT Enterprise Forum, which have many exciting events such as guest speaker Lester Thurow and on-going venture capital and cornerstone clinics.

Lastly, I would like to broadcast the need for volunteers to both serve and/or lead a newly established role within the Board, VP of Community Service.  MIT alumni/ae have a commitment to their community to raise awareness and quality of math and science education either through direct involvement with area schools or sponsorship of activities such as LEAP, MITES and/or UPOP, to name a few.  For information regarding any of these programs, to volunteer either as a board member or for activities, or if you have ideas how to successfully establish this effort, please contact us.

Special thanks to Glen Dorflinger for sponsoring a LEAP teacher this year allowing our South Texas alumni/ae to send two teachers for the summer 2004 program!

Cheers,
Raul Valdez, Class of 1994
President MIT Club of South Texas 2003-04

MIT Judges Needed for Science Engineering Fair
March 26, 2004
6:30pm – 9:00pm

The MIT Club needs judges for the 2004 Science Engineering Fair of Houston.  The judging will be from 6:30 to 9:00 pm on Friday, March 26 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.  We need volunteers to look at the exhibits, talk to the students, and select three prizewinners.

This is a chance for you to meet and encourage 7th through 12th grade students who are interested in science and engineering.  If you are interested in being a judge, please email Arno Bommer or call him at 281-492-2784 (W) or 713-461-5199 (H).

Leadership In Education Program (LEAP):  Call for 2004 Nominees

The MIT Club of South Texas through its Leadership in Education program has an ongoing interest in encouraging students interested in science and mathematics and in helping to elevate the level of technical literacy in our community.  We would like to recognize key science and math teachers in the Greater Houston area who are making a difference and to support their ongoing commitment to educating our youth in science and technology.

We invite science and math teachers from the Greater Houston Area to apply for the 2004 MIT Leadership in Education Award.  The winner of this award will attend the 2004 MIT Science and Engineering Program for Teachers at our expense.  This program brings educators to the MIT campus for one week of intense study with MIT faculty and scientists who work at the leading edge of research.  This program is described more fully in the accompanying brochure. We will select a winner based on enthusiasm as an educator, credibility among peers, ability to stimulate students in science and technology, and interest in making a difference in our community. This is the tenth year we have supported teachers from South Texas to attend this unique program.

In order to be considered for a scholarship and travel expenses for the MIT summer program, we will need to receive applications by March 15, 2004.

2004 Club Membership Drive

It’s time once again, time for the annual MIT Club of South Texas membership drive.  The MIT Club of South Texas invites you to join or renew your membership for 2004.  Membership in the club runs coincident with the calendar year, which means that those members who paid their dues before October 1, 2003 need to renew now for 2004.  Membership is open to all MIT alumni and alumnae, as well as current undergraduate and graduate students and their parents.  Your dues in the local club are used to pay for mailing announcements and the newsletter, sponsor events for local high school students accepted at the Institute, award prizes at local science fairs, and improve local science and math education through our Leadership in Education Program (LEAP).  Although we do benefit from some administrative assistance from the Institute, the MIT Club of South Texas does not receive funding from MIT or from the Alumni/ae Association.

Last year was one of our best membership years ever for our local club, and we’d like to make next year another winner.  Join today to get the maximum benefit from your membership!
