January 16th, 2004
9am to Noon

Thomas Middle School (HISD South) will be having their Science Fair on Friday, January 16, 2004, from 9am to noon and they are in dire need of judges.  If you are interested in participating, please let me know and I will put you in contact with the school.  The school is located near the intersection of 610 and 288.  It will be a modest fair, but a good opportunity for those who may be nearby and want to be involved in the community.

P.S.  Houston Science and Engineering Fair Call For Judges to be announced soon.

Leadership In Education Program (LEAP):  Call for 2004 Nominees

The MIT Club of South Texas through its Leadership in Education program has an ongoing interest in encouraging students interested in science and mathematics and in helping to elevate the level of technical literacy in our community.  We would like to recognize key science and math teachers in the Greater Houston area who are making a difference and to support their ongoing commitment to educating our youth in science and technology.

We invite science and math teachers from the Greater Houston Area to apply for the 2004 MIT Leadership in Education Award.  The winner of this award will attend the 2004 MIT Science and Engineering Program for Teachers at our expense.  This program brings educators to the MIT campus for one week of intense study with MIT faculty and scientists who work at the leading edge of research.  This program is described more fully in the accompanying brochure. We will select a winner based on enthusiasm as an educator, credibility among peers, ability to stimulate students in science and technology, and interest in making a difference in our community. This is the tenth year we have supported teachers from South Texas to attend this unique program.

In order to be considered for a scholarship and travel expenses for the MIT summer program, we will need to receive applications by March 15, 2004.

2004 Club Membership Drive

It’s time once again, time for the annual MIT Club of South Texas membership drive.  The MIT Club of South Texas invites you to join or renew your membership for 2004.  Membership in the club runs coincident with the calendar year, which means that those members who paid their dues before October 1, 2003 need to renew now for 2004.  Membership is open to all MIT alumni and alumnae, as well as current undergraduate and graduate students and their parents.  Your dues in the local club are used to pay for mailing announcements and the newsletter, sponsor events for local high school students accepted at the Institute, award prizes at local science fairs, and improve local science and math education through our Leadership in Education Program (LEAP).  Although we do benefit from some administrative assistance from the Institute, the MIT Club of South Texas does not receive funding from MIT or from the Alumni/ae Association.

Click here for a Membership Coupon

Last year was one of our best membership years ever for our local club, and we’d like to make next year another winner.  Join today to get the maximum benefit from your membership!
