Announcing our first “MIT at Home” Seminar featuring local MIT alums who are on
the cutting edge of technology. “MIT at Home” is patterned after MIT’s
successful “MIT On The Road” Program. We recently sent out an email to local
alumni asking if anyone was interested in talking about their work and we
received a very good response. Our inaugural program will consist of three
talks in the Medical field:
"Adding the 4th Dimension to
Radiation Therapy."
George Starkschall '67 and Craig Stevens '81
The standard approach to radiation treatment for cancer involves planning
the treatment based on a patient model derived from a single CT scan acquired
shortly before the initial. The development of high-speed CT scanners as well
as techniques for monitoring patient motion enable us to account for patient
motion explicitly in radiation therapy. We describe some of the technologies
that make it possible to determine the magnitude of patient motion during
radiation treatment and incorporate it into planning and delivery of radiation
treatments.
“Drug Discovery for
HIV/AIDS.”
Bill O'Brien ‘77
Therapy of HIV/AIDS over the last 20 years has been a wild rollercoaster
ride. Long-term suppression of HIV growth is the secret to controlling this
disease, and to accomplish this, new treatments and creative approaches are
needed. While the first 16 anti-HIV drugs attacked one of two virus replication
steps that occurs after the virus is inside the cell, the first drug to inhibit
HIV entry was approved earlier this year, opening a new era of anti-HIV
treatment. Our approach is to generate recombinant proteins that present the
relevant regions of the large HIV envelope in a way that allow us to screen for
compounds that bind to HIV envelope, and which may also inhibit HIV entry.
“Vaccine Development”
Catherine Schein SM ‘76
Abstract
Posted Oct 29, 2003: Up until the
middle of the 20th century, children's lives were often cut short by diseases
such as polio, whooping cough, diphtheria, smallpox, tuberculosis and tetanus.
The incidence of these and other diseases has been greatly reduced thanks to the
most important medical advance in human history, mass vaccination. Renewed
threats from hepatitis A and new ones from SARS and West Nile virus have shown
that we cannot ignore diseases that rampage in some of our trading partners.
This talk will briefly present, using Dengue Fever as an example, how new
research tools can aid in developing vaccines against viruses.

making presentations at future seminars should contact
