Sloan Alum Event, March 13

It is time that we organize an informal get-together to get to know one another, have a good time, and strengthen our network.

What:   "HOUSTON SLOAN CLUB GET-TOGETHER" - light refreshments will be served.

When:   Thursday, March 13th- 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM

Where:   4807 Caroline  - in the Museum district.

Suggested Donation:   $5/person or less depending on sponsorships.
(Let us know if you or your company can sponsor some of the refreshments).

How you can help:

- RSVP by Noon, Tuesday March 12th & confirm your email and contact data regardless of whether you can attend;

- Pass this on to other Sloanies and come together. One of the goals is to get a complete and accurate list of who is down here.

- Open your hearts and your rolodexes :)

MIT Judging at Houston Engineering and Science Fair, March 28

MIT Judges Needed for Science Engineering Fair

The MIT Club needs judges for the 2003 Science Engineering Fair of Houston.  The judging will be from 6:30 to 9:30 pm on Friday, March 28 at the Reliant Astroarena.  We need volunteers to look at the exhibits, talk to the students, and select three prizewinners.

This is a chance for you to meet and encourage 7th through 12th grade students who are interested in science and engineering.  If you are interested in being a judge, please email Arno Bommer or call him at 281-492-2784 (W) or 713-461-5199 (H).

Elections for new board members for the MIT Club of South Texas will take place at the May 2003 monthly board meeting. We are looking for any and all interested nominees. MIT Club of South Texas Community Service

The MIT Club of South Texas would like to solicit donations and/or tutoring from local area alums in support of the new Catch the Teen Wave program sponsored by M.D. Anderson YMCA in Houston’s Northside.  Catch the Teen Wave is designed as an after school program for ages 13-17 offering a wide range of activities such as tutoring, sports/weight training, community service, and yoga to name a few.   The pilot program began in November with hopes to begin full operation on January, 2003.  If you are interested in donating time and/or monetary gift (designated or undesignated), please contact Raul Valdez at 713.245.7645.  A wish list from Catch the Teen Wave program sponsor Maria D. Arcos is available.  Program hours are Monday-Thursday 3:30pm to 6:30pm and Friday 1:30pm to 6:30pm.

2003 Club of South Texas Membership Drive

It’s time once again, time for the annual MIT Club of South Texas membership drive.  The MIT Club of South Texas invites you to join or renew your membership for 2003.  Membership in the club runs coincident with the calendar year, which means that those members who paid their dues before October 1, 2002 need to renew now for 2003.  Membership is open to all MIT alumni and alumnae, as well as current undergraduate and graduate students and their parents.  Your dues in the local club are used to pay for mailing announcements and the newsletter, sponsor events for local high school students accepted at the Institute, award prizes at local science fairs, and improve local science and math education through our Leadership in Education Program (LEAP).  Although we do benefit from some administrative assistance from the Institute, the MIT Club of South Texas does not receive funding from MIT or from the Alumni/ae Association.
