2003 Leadership in Education Program

This is the tenth year that the MIT Club of South Texas will sponsor a teacher to attend the MIT Science and Engineering Program for Teachers.  The one-week summer program gives the teacher an update of the state-of-the-art in chemistry, physics, mathematics and the life sciences; an understanding in principle of the synthesis, processing, properties, and performance of conventional and innovative engineering materials; and an introduction to the design and manufacture of important engineering systems, including management and techno-economic decision making.  The teachers who have attended in the past have likened it to drinking science out of a fire hose.  In part through your generous contributions to our Leadership in Education program, we are able to cover all of the travel and living expenses of the teachers that we sponsor.

We will be sending invitations to many of the school districts in this area inviting them to help us identify candidates who are leaders in educating the youth in our community.  The selection of a winner is based on the candidate’s enthusiasm as an educator, the credibility among peers, the ability to stimulate students in science and technology, and interest in making a difference in our community.  If you know a teacher in the South Texas area who you think meets the selection criteria, encourage him or her to apply.  If teachers do not receive information from their administration, then they should contact Ed Rinehart (713-965-4563, office or 281-679-7608, home) to get application information. The deadline for applying is February 28, 2003.  If you would like to lend your financial support to this worthy effort, you can do so conveniently by including your contribution along with your dues.

2003 Club of South Texas Membership Drive

It’s time once again, time for the annual MIT Club of South Texas membership drive.  The MIT Club of South Texas invites you to join or renew your membership for 2003.  Membership in the club runs coincident with the calendar year, which means that those members who paid their dues before October 1, 2002 need to renew now for 2003.  Membership is open to all MIT alumni and alumnae, as well as current undergraduate and graduate students and their parents.  Your dues in the local club are used to pay for mailing announcements and the newsletter, sponsor events for local high school students accepted at the Institute, award prizes at local science fairs, and improve local science and math education through our Leadership in Education Program (LEAP).  Although we do benefit from some administrative assistance from the Institute, the MIT Club of South Texas does not receive funding from MIT or from the Alumni/ae Association.

Click here for a Membership Coupon

Last year was one of our best membership years ever for our local club, and we’d like to make next year another winner.  Join today to get the maximum benefit from your membership!
