Design to Mechanical Engineers The MIT Club of South Texas
is proud to present an evening with MIT Prof. Alexander Slocum ‘82, our 2000-2001 Institute Speaker.
He received his S.B., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from MIT and is currently a
Professor of Mechanical Engineering and a MacVicar Faculty Fellow.
He holds several patents and has won several R&D 100 Awards for best
new technical products. The talk will touch on two of his favorite subjects,
student design courses and precision engineering research. Prof. Slocum has been
teaching design to students at MIT since 1985.
He is currently the instructor in-charge for the world-famous Introduction
to Design course 2.007 (formerly 2.70).
He also teaches graduate students how to design precision
machines in course 2.75. In
addition, he also teaches a 2 week, 8 hour/day intensive design seminar for
minority freshman in the 2nd Summer program, for which he received
the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award.
Prof. Slocum teaches that design is a process, and that the key catalyst
is passion. This presentation will show how he teaches design, and how he
incites passion for design in his students.
He will show how he personally approaches design problems by giving
examples from his research ranging from MassagaSoap™
to precision kinematic couplings for
sub-micron alignment, to MEMs structures.

Alum Is On The International Space Station! Officially beginning the permanent human presence onboard the
International Space Station is the Expedition 1 crew: Russian cosmonauts Sergei Krikalev, Yuri Gidzenko and
American astronaut and MIT South Texas alum Capt. Bill Shepherd, US Navy,
flew
to the International Space Station on November 30th via the Russian
Soyuz space vehicle. You can get
the latest updates on their activities at the following NASA website: http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/station/ The International Space Station is now the 3rd
brightest object in the sky. You
can use the NASA SkyWatch application to find out when it will be visible with
the unaided eye over your location: http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/ Also,
we’ve just added a new section to our website with information on MIT
Astronauts: http://alumweb.mit.edu/clubs/s-texas/doc/Astro/AstroHome.htm You
can find out which space missions MIT Astronauts have flown on as well as
upcoming missions they will be flying! -
Stacey Nakamura It’s time once again, time for the 2001 MIT Club of South Texas membership drive. The MIT Club of South Texas invites you to join or renew your membership for 2001. Membership in the club runs coincident with the calendar year, which means that those members who paid their dues before October 1, 2000 need to renew now for 2001. Membership is open to all MIT alumni and alumnae, as well as current undergraduate and graduate students and their parents. Your
dues in the local club are used to pay for mailing announcements and the
newsletter, sponsor events for local high school students accepted at the
Institute, award prizes at local science fairs, and improve local science and
math education through our Leadership in Education Program (LEAP). For over six years we have been sending local high school
teachers to MIT for a one-week session in secondary science education.
Although we do benefit from some administrative assistance from the
Institute, the MIT Club of South Texas does not receive funding from MIT or
from the Alumni/ae Association. Membership
is available at several levels. Regular
membership continues to be $25 per year level.
Patron membership is offered for an annual contribution of $50.
Special Sustaining and Benefactor membership is available for those who
contribute $100 and $200, respectively. As
recent graduates, members of the Classes of 1996 through 2000 can join at the
special reduced rate of only $5 per year. Members
at all levels receive discounts as well as preferred enrollment for themselves
and their guests at MIT Club of South Texas sponsored events. This
year we are offering a new benefit: if
you have MIT EFL (Email Forwarding for Life), you will be able to pay your dues
on-line via our secure website. Additionally,
once you have paid your dues via our website, ou will then be able to register
for and pay for Club events on-line. To
learn more about this new feature please visit: http://alumweb.mit.edu/clubs/s-texas/clubtoolsinfo.htm Last year was one of our best membership
years ever for our local club, and we’d like to make next year another winner. Join today to get the maximum benefit from your membership! - Al Cisar Membership
Now Extended to Parents The Club recently revised its bylaws to allow
parents of current students to join. Newsletter
distribution will now include parents and we look forward to having parents
participate in club activities. I am a parent and wish to sign up for membership via ClubTools...how do I do that? I am a parent and wish to sign up for membership by mailing a check...how do I do that? Club Website Now Has Past Event Archives The
Club’s website has another new feature: an archive of past events!
