Houston Early Music Society – Ensemble Anonymus
Friday, April 20, 2001
Pre-Concert Dinner at 6:00 PM
Black Labrador Pub

Concert at 8:00 PM
St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 Main St.

For those of you whose musical tastes go beyond the “Backstreet Boys”, we will attend the final concert of the season of the “Houston Early Music Society”.  The musical group is “Ensemble Anonymus”, which will perform works of the Medieval Era.  What’s that?  You’ve never been to a medieval music concert, but always wanted to?  Well, now’s your chance!  The Houston Early Music Society describes this concert thus: “Your musical voyage ranges from the transparent harmonies of Hildegard to frolicking dances and spirited tunes – a journey not to be missed.” (http://www.tayara.com/earlymusic/) Tickets are $20 each ($15 for students and seniors).

The concert is Friday, April 20, 2001, 8:00 PM, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 Main St., between Calumet and Binz. Check the club website for a map.  You can either go directly to the concert, or join us for dinner beforehand at the “Black Labrador Pub” at 6:00 PM.  That address is 4100 Montrose Blvd. (near W. Main St. – north of Richmond Ave.).

Also, there is a pre-concert lecture at 7:00 in the church.  The topic is “Fabulous Feasts - What did those people eat?”  You can join us for dinner, go to the lecture, or do both if you eat very, very quickly.

The concert is general admission, and they say they won’t sell out, so you can buy tickets at the door.  If you want to have your tickets waiting for you at the door, call the Houston Early Music Society at 713-432-1744 (leave a message with a phone number and they will call back).  Have your credit card ready.  But wait – you’re not finished yet.  Call me (home at 713-436-3538) or email, and tell me if you will join us for dinner so I can reserve a table, or if you will meet us at the concert.  See you there!

International Dinner - Samba Café
Saturday, April 28

RSVP by April 25

Our next International Dinner will be at "Samba Cafe", a Brazilian restaurant.  Samba Cafe  (tel. 713-961-7379) is at 3055 Sage, between Westheimer and Richmond - just south of the Galleria. Check the club website for a map.

The cost is $20 (different from usual!), which covers food, soft drinks, tax, and tip, with wine and beer extra.  They have many Brazilian dishes planned for us (including Feijoada, a thick, rich stew of black beans, pork ribs, sausage, and dried beef), so this is one dinner you shouldn’t miss!  You can come as early as 6:30 PM for a social half-hour.  Dinner is at 7:00 PM

Please RSVP to me at home at 713-436-3538, or via email, by Wednesday, April 25.  Seating is limited, so dues-paid members (& their guests) have priority.  Also, at a recent dinner, we were charged for no-shows, so if you can’t make it, PLEASE CALL ME!  I hope to see you there!

Finally, the next International Dinner following is planned for June.  Further details in a future e-mail and/or newsletter, or check our web site.

Houston “Friends of Archaeology”
Sunday, April 29, 7:00 PM
"New Light on the Pharaoh Akhenaton: Excavations at the Karnak Temple"
Jones Auditorium on the mall, St. Thomas University, 3900 Yoakum Blvd

One of the nicer surprises in life is discovering something wonderful right under your nose.  The Houston “Friends of Archaeology” has been in existence for 10 years and sponsors archaeology-related educational trips and lectures.  Occasionally, they also sponsor free lectures open to the general public.  These will not be “formal” South Texas Club events per se, but we plan to highlight these public events for your information.

The next event is:
12th Annual Distinguished Lecture in Archaeology
The Shiffick Lecture
"New Light on the Pharaoh Akhenaton: Excavations at the Karnak Temple"
Dr. Donald Redford, Pennsylvania State University
A reception for the Speaker will follow the illustrated lecture.

For further information, please contact me at (713) 932-9363 or via email

Annual Club Membership Drive

It’s time once again, time for the 2001 MIT Club of South Texas membership drive.  The MIT Club of South Texas invites you to join or renew your membership for 2001.  Membership in the club runs coincident with the calendar year, which means that those members who paid their dues before October 1, 2000 need to renew now for 2001.  Membership is open to all MIT alumni and alumnae, as well as current undergraduate and graduate students and their parents.

Your dues in the local club are used to pay for mailing announcements and the newsletter, sponsor events for local high school students accepted at the Institute, award prizes at local science fairs, and improve local science and math education through our Leadership in Education Program (LEAP).  For over six years we have been sending local high school teachers to MIT for a one-week session in secondary science education.  Although we do benefit from some administrative assistance from the Institute, the MIT Club of South Texas does not receive funding from MIT or from the Alumni/ae Association.

Membership is available at several levels.  Regular membership continues to be $25 per year level.  Patron membership is offered for an annual contribution of $50.  Special Sustaining and Benefactor membership is available for those who contribute $100 and $200, respectively.  As recent graduates, members of the Classes of 1996 through 2000 can join at the special reduced rate of only $5 per year.  Members at all levels receive discounts as well as preferred enrollment for themselves and their guests at MIT Club of South Texas sponsored events.

Last year was one of our best membership years ever for our local club, and we’d like to make next year another winner.

Join today to get the maximum benefit from your membership!
