MIT Alumni Association Withdraws Agreement with ClubTools

The MIT Alumni Association has announced that our e-commerce service provider, ClubTools, is ceasing operations.  The following is a statement from Christine Tempesta, MIT Alumni Association:

“January brought us some discouraging news here at the Association…ClubTools, the vendor that the Association selected to provide our Clubs with online services, lost their venture capital suddenly.  On January 4 we were informed by the ClubTools CEO that the primary investor for their company had unexpectedly suspended funding and that ClubTools would "close”…This was a great surprise to us, since as recently as our December Association Board of Directors meeting we had received a clean financial "bill of health" from ClubTools and their investor group.

Although we believed that ClubTools provided the best solution available for our Clubs, each day has brought new complications to us that will likely prohibit us from owning the technology to keep the current product running…The Alumni Association has determined that at this time it is in the best interests of our volunteer clubs to investigate new vendors or to develop the online capabilities internally. We have redistributed our request for proposals, and we will host vendors on campus for presentations at the end of this month…We are sensitive to the issue of time and will work quickly for the smoothest transition possible.  Our goal is to have clubs using a new product by the beginning of summer.”

Annual Club Membership Drive

It’s time once again, time for the 2001 MIT Club of South Texas membership drive.  The MIT Club of South Texas invites you to join or renew your membership for 2001.  Membership in the club runs coincident with the calendar year, which means that those members who paid their dues before October 1, 2000 need to renew now for 2001.  Membership is open to all MIT alumni and alumnae, as well as current undergraduate and graduate students and their parents.

Your dues in the local club are used to pay for mailing announcements and the newsletter, sponsor events for local high school students accepted at the Institute, award prizes at local science fairs, and improve local science and math education through our Leadership in Education Program (LEAP).  For over six years we have been sending local high school teachers to MIT for a one-week session in secondary science education.  Although we do benefit from some administrative assistance from the Institute, the MIT Club of South Texas does not receive funding from MIT or from the Alumni/ae Association.

Membership is available at several levels.  Regular membership continues to be $25 per year level.  Patron membership is offered for an annual contribution of $50.  Special Sustaining and Benefactor membership is available for those who contribute $100 and $200, respectively.  As recent graduates, members of the Classes of 1996 through 2000 can join at the special reduced rate of only $5 per year.  Members at all levels receive discounts as well as preferred enrollment for themselves and their guests at MIT Club of South Texas sponsored events.

Last year was one of our best membership years ever for our local club, and we’d like to make next year another winner.

Join today to get the maximum benefit from your membership!

International Dining Club:  Queen of Sheba
Saturday, February 24
RSVP by February 21   (
713) 436-3538
Social at 6:00 PM     Dinner at 6:30 PM
(NOTE TIME DIFFERENT FROM USUAL!)

Our next International Dinner will be at "Queen of Sheba", an Ethiopian restaurant.  The cost is $15, which covers food, soft drinks, tax, and tip, with wine and beer extra.  We've noticed that people like to socialize before dinner at these things, so you can come as early as 6:00 PM for a social half-hour. Dinner will be served just after 6:30 PM.

Queen of Sheba is located at 5710 Bellaire, corner of Alder Drive in Houston (tel. 713-665-3009).  It is between Hillcroft and Chimney Rock, and just north of Bissonnet and west of 610.  Check the club website for a map.

Please RSVP to me at home at 713-436-3538, or via email, by Wednesday, February 21.  Seating is limited, so dues-paid members (& their guests) have priority.  Also, at a dinner recently, we were charged for no-shows, so if you responded but can't make it, please call me!  I hope to see you there!

Finally, the International Dinner following this is planned for April.  Further details in a future e-mail and/or newsletter, or check our web site.

Houston “Friends of Archaeology”
Sunday, March 4

One of the nicer surprises in life is discovering something wonderful right under your nose.  The Houston “Friends of Archaeology” has been in existence for 10 years and sponsors archaeology-related educational trips and lectures.  Occasionally, they also sponsor free lectures open to the general public.  These will not be “formal” South Texas Club events per se, but we plan to highlight these public events for your information.  One of the upcoming events is “Excavation in Eastern Lower Galilee:  Their Significance for Israelite History,” presented by Dr. Harold Liebowitz, University of Texas:  Sunday, March 4, 2001, 7:00pm, Jones Auditorium, 3900 Yoakum Blvd, University of St. Thomas.  For further information, please contact me at (713) 932-9363 or via email

Leadership in Education 2001
Nominations Due by End of February

This is the eighth year that the MIT Club of South Texas will sponsor a teacher to attend the MIT Science and Engineering Program for Teachers. The one-week summer program gives the teacher an update of

  • the state-of-the-art in chemistry, physics, mathematics and the life sciences
  • an understanding in principle of the synthesis, processing, properties, and performance of conventional and innovative engineering materials; and
  • an introduction to the design and manufacture of important engineering systems, including management and techno-economic decision making

The teachers who have attended in the past have likened it to drinking science out of a fire hose. In part through your generous contributions to our Leadership in Education Program, we are able to cover all of the travel and living expenses of the teachers that we sponsor.

We have sent invitations to many of the school districts inviting them to help us identify candidates who are leaders in educating the youth in our community. The selection of a winner is based on the candidate's enthusiasm as an educator, the credibility among peers, the ability to stimulate students in science and technology, and interest in making a difference in our community.

If you know a teacher in the South Texas area who you think meets the selection criteria, please encourage him or her to apply. If teachers do not receive information from their administration, then they should contact Ed Rinehart (713-965-4563, office or 281-679-7608, home) to get application information. If you would like to lend your financial support to this worthy effort, you can do so conveniently by including your contribution along with your dues.

– Ed Rinehart
