MIT Alums In Space – Four, At The Same Time!
(updated 10-11-2008)

There have been many times in which two MIT astronauts have been in space at the same time (6 Space Shuttle missions and 1 Apollo mission), but for the first time in NASA history, four MIT astronauts will be in space simultaneously in November, 2008:

From May 2008 to May 2009, a MIT Astronaut will be a member of every Shuttle and ISS Expedition mission

A total of nine MIT Astronauts will be in space from May 2008 to May 2009, and four of the nine will be going to space for the first time:  Greg Chamitoff, Stephen Bowen, Dominic Antonelli, and Christopher Cassidy

Greg Chamitoff
PhD Course 16, ‘92

MIT Alum Greg Chamitoff Flew to the International Space Station (ISS) as a mission specialist on Shuttle Mission STS-124 He replaced Garrett Reisman as Expedition 17 flight engineer and will return to Earth on shuttle mission STS-126 after working on the ISS for 6 months (STS-126 is targeted to launch Nov 10, 2008.)  Chamitoff, who was born in Montreal, Canada, grew up in San Jose, Calif. He has a doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 
STS-124 Launched on May 31, 2008 and Landed on June 14, 2008

Greg is a member of the ISS Expedition Crew 17 and will work on the ISS for 6 Months!


Astronaut Greg Chamitoff, Expedition 17 flight engineer, floats in the newly installed Kibo Japanese Pressurized Module of the International Space Station while Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-124) is docked with the station.
