Yatra Our next International Dinner will be at “Yatra”, a downtown Indian restaurant. We have not done Indian cuisine in many years, we decided that it is time that we sampled it once more. As Houston Chronicle’s food critic Alison Cook put it quite appropriately "at long last, Indian food has come to downtown Houston". Yatra, meaning "sacred journey" in Sanskrit, comes to Houston direct from London, where it opened in the posh Mayfair district in 2000. And has acquired a reputation as a trendy spot that serves quality Indian food. Owners Micki Hidayatallah and Sonu Lalvani, both Londoners, bypassed Los Angeles and New York in favor of Texas' largest city to open their first American outpost. The result is a jewel box of a restaurant in the heart of downtown Houston dishing up delectable Indian cuisine with mouthwatering effect. Sonu, who manages Yatra has promised us a sumptuous feast consisting of a variety of dishes from his menu which can be viewed at http://www.yatrausa.com. We are planning a menu that will include the famous samosa chaat, spicy calamari, irresistible Goan-style crab cakes, Rogan Josh, a classic Kashmir lamb curry and crowd favorite chicken tikka masala (national dish of the UK) amongst many others. While you are browsing Yatra’s website, do not forget to peruse the rave reviews that Yatra has garnered from the Houston Chronicle’s and Houston Press’ food critics. And if you want to read customer reviews, please click here After dinner we can retire to the adjacent lounge, “Butterfly High” to enjoy liqueurs or pomegranate inspired Butterfly High Martini or the Sweet Lychee Martini and have a hookah at the Casablanca lounge. For those who still have the energy, they can then complete the night by dancing to a decidedly eclectic mix of Arabic, Western and Indian music at the underground “Bar Bollywood”.

Our upcoming international dining experience will move to east Africa, where we will taste authentic Ethiopian food in the traditional manner (some people called the restaurant an "exotic" eatery, where fingers are your forks and basket is the dish; but nothing should be exotic for MIT alumni, right?!) Gomen
(chopped collard green with fresh garlic and bell pepper cooled with olive
oil); Seating is limited to 15 people----please RSVP on SmarTransTM by Thursday, October 12, 11pm CT.

2006 March 5 - Yong Chen 2005 January 29 Saturday, 7:00pm Rioja Restaurant This is no hole-in-the-wall! Rioja Restaurant is one of the hottest new restaurants in Houston. First place winner at the Houston International Paella Festival, Rioja is packed every night. The Houston Press recently gave Rioja rave reviews declaring its paella "exquisite". Owner Luis Acosta will personally treat us to a selection of cold and hot tapas and his award-winning paella. He might even tell us a bit about the business of starting and running a restaurant. In addition there will be a live guitarist. $30 per person covers food, non-alcoholic drink, tax, and gratuity (we have been charged in the past for no shows, so please let me know your RSVP status by January 25th). As always, wine, beer and liquor are extra. But be sure to try some of Luis’ great Spanish wines. I will admit that some previous Dining Events have had (how can I put this delicately) less than spectacular surroundings. But this looks to be a great one! Check out Rioja’s website at www.riojarestaurant.com 2004 April 17 El Pueblito Place Join us on April 17th for an evening of Guatemalan cuisine. We have arranged a dinner package for $20 per person: appetizers, entrees, and non-alcoholic beverage, tax and tip included. - Raul Valdez 2003 November 22 Saturday, 7:00pm Jamaica West Restaurant "Come and have a taste of the island" at our November International Dining Club event. On Saturday, November 22, 2003, we will dine at the Jamaica West Restaurant. The menu will include jerk chicken and curry goat. They claim 'Come and enjoy the mouth watering and delightful aroma of the best and most authentic Caribbean dishes in the west.' I think they mean west Houston. The price is $20 per person and includes tax, tip, and soft drink (wine and beer is available at extra cost). 2003 April 26 The Taste of Portugal Saturday, 6:30 PM Our next International Dinner will be at "A Taste of Portugal". The Owner/Chef is Jorge Fife, a native of Portugal who came to Texas about 4 years ago after a 25 year sojourn in South Africa. He claims that this is the only Portuguese restaurant in the whole of Texas. Jorge is a most engaging personality and he has promised us a sumptuous feast consisting of a variety of dishes from his menu which can be viewed at http://www.atasteofportugal.net. A unique feature of this restaurant is that wine is on the house! So, as usual the Happy Hour will start at 6.30pm and dinner will be served at 7.00pm. The restaurant has received rave reviews which can be seen at: http://www.houstonpress.com/issues/2003-02-27/cafe.html/1/index.html and at http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/restaurants/reviews/rsv2322.asp. The cost is $17.50, which covers food, wine, soft drinks, coffee, tax, and tip. The address is 11650 "A" Jones Road, Houston, Texas 77070 (281.469.8691). The restaurant is exactly 3.7 miles north of Highway 290, at the intersection of Jones Road and Woodedge.
