Come celebrate the Club's 11th annual Shakespeare outing!  This year is one of the best years to attend, as the UH School of Theatre will be performing Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, at the Houston Shakespeare Festival on Saturday, August 9, 2008.  This is a perfect chance to see a masterpiece brought to life, especially for those of us who’ve only sat through the high school English readings of the renowned playwright.  So relax and enjoy the night breeze with your fellow alums at Houston’s historical Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park and see how great performances are even greater “live.”  Tickets are free of charge and we will do our best to secure reserved seating for all.

You will need to be seated by 8:25 PM to prevent the theatre from releasing your seat, so be prepared to sit on the grass if you happen to be late or in case we run out of tickets.

Before our thespian outing, we will be grabbing a bite to eat at 6:30 PM at Hobbit Café, 2243 Richmond Ave (located between Kirby and Shepherd).  Known for its specialty sandwiches and a variety of dishes that more than satisfy veggie and meat lovers alike, this cozy eatery has been drawing faithful patrons for over 35 years and is a must for anyone wanting to experience a taste of Houston.

Plan to pick up your tickets to the play at the Hobbit Café as well.

Although this is a free event, to help us with planning, please register via SmarTransTM, and please specify if you will join us for dinner at the Hobbit Café (SmarTransTM will ask you that question).

Please contact Lan Chang if you could volunteer to help us pick up tickets at the Miller box office at 11:30 AM on the day of the performance (we need one volunteer for every 4 tickets we pick up.  Please help out if you can so everyone can enjoy the performance together!

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS TOUR

Saturday, 1:30 PM

You’ve heard about the new museum, now come and see it !! Late in March the Houston Museum of Fine Arts opened the new Audrey Jones Beck Building, making it the sixth largest museum in the U.S. This striking addition, designed by esteemed Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, more than doubles the museum's galleries for the display of its permanent collection and special exhibitions. With this addition, Houston will finally be able to book the blockbuster exhibitions that have passed us by.

Now you have a chance to get a guided tour of the new building. The MIT Club has booked a group tour for Saturday August 19 at 1:30 PM in the afternoon. We’ll meet in the lobby of the Beck Building (on the corner of Binz and Main, see the map on the website) by 1:15 PM.

After the tour those who are interested will go out for a late lunch at a restaurant in the Museum District to be selected by consensus.

The cost is just $10 per person for dues paid members and their friends, $17 per person for other alumni. RSVP by August 16th.
