South Texas Reception: MIT Public Service Center (PSC) 20th
Anniversary
Please join us for an evening with
Sally
Susnowitz, Director of the
MIT Public Service Center, as we celebrate the 20th
anniversary of the PSC! Learn about the past, present and future of the PSC.
As part of MIT's Division of Student
Life and Department of Student Life Programs, the main goal of the PSC is to
enrich the educational and life experiences of students through leadership
and service opportunities. The PSC provides volunteer opportunities locally
in the Boston area as well as domestic and foreign fellowship
opportunities. Learn more about the PSC at their
website and how you can
get involved with the PSC.
We are
pleased to have So Vino Bistro and Wine Bar as our venue for this event:
they are relatively new to the Houston scene and have received excellent
reviews. We have reserved the entire bar section for our event.
Reception includes 2 glasses of wine and heavy
hors d'oeuvres – additional glasses of wine may be purchased a la carte.
$10 of each ticket will be donated to the MIT Public Service Center (PSC).
The Club
of South Texas would like to thank Houston area MIT Parents Medha Karve and
Ellen Turner who conceived the idea for a local PSC 20th
anniversary celebration. Medha and Ellen serve on the MIT PSC Leadership
Council (think “board of advisors”) and Medha’s husband, Shashank Karve ’81,
has been a long time supporter of the PSC (an example of a unique win win
situation: his company lists community outreach as an executive “key
performance indicator” and helping MIT students with PSC projects in South
America was a natural “fit”.)

Rice University President’s Lecture Series of Diverse Scholars
Dr. Sylvester
James Gates Jr. ‘77
John S. Toll Professor of Physics
Director,
Center for String and Particle
Theory
University of Maryland
Sylvester James Gates Jr. received
Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Physics and his Ph.D. in
Physics at MIT. His doctoral
studies in elementary particle physics and quantum field theory evolved
into research on supersymmetry. Gates has since authored or co-authored
more than 120 research papers published in scientific journals,
co-authored a book, “Superspace, or One Thousand and One Lessons in
Supersymmetry,” and contributed numerous articles to other publications.
His research in mathematical and theoretical physics of supersymmetric
particles, fields and strings, covers topics such as the physics of
quarks, leptons, gravity, super and heterotic strings and unified field
theories of the type first envisioned by Albert Einstein. Distinguished
among scientists working at the cutting edge of physics, Gates also has
helped introduce scientific concepts to the public through the PBS
television programs “Breakthrough: The Changing Face of Science in
America,” “A Science Odyssey,” “The Elegant Universe” and “Einstein’s
Big Idea” and in “Superstring Theory: The DNA of Reality,” a popular DVD
lecture collection. |

Special Note about
last month’s *InterClub Happy Hour: The Sept 2008 *InterClub Happy
Hour was hosted by
Mount Holyoke

Dartmouth
and was held at So Vino Bistro & Wine Bar. This happy hour will be
remembered as the "Hurricane" happy hour: So Vino still did not
have electricity on Sept 18, but they still served us out on the
patio with candles. Since the So Vino kitchen was closed, Laura
Kamrath / Mt. Holyoke College provided Dominoes Pizzas.....many
thanks to Laura !

2008
The MIT Women’s
Volleyball team will be playing in San Antonio Texas on October 24 and

The
women's volleyball team finished the 2007 season with five tournament
championships and a 36-3 record. They also finished the season with a
NEWMAC Conference regular season championship, a New England regional
ranking of #2, and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Division III
National Championship Tournament.
Trinity University is currently ranked #6 and Ohio Northern is #10 in
