Satellite Broadcast: Entrepreneurship in a Global Economy, An Examination of Today's Economic Environment

Wednesday, September 18 at 3:45pm PST
Fisher Plaza, Seattle
SIRTI, Spokane

Our first Satellite Broadcast for the 2002-2003 season features Lester Thurow, Professor of Economics and Management and Dean Emeritus of the Sloan School of Business at MIT. Thurow is a global thought leader in economics and is the author of a dozen books, including three New York Times best sellers. He is a captivating speaker and mentor and the Enterprise Forum is delighted to host what promises to be a dynamic discussion.

Thurow will address the characteristics of today's recession and the two primary factors that contributed to it - current shifts in technology and the entrepreneurship that came with it. What are the characteristics of today's recession and what can we expect in the future? Thurow will address the following:

    • Markets go from "overly optimistic" to "overly pessimistic" without ever passing through truth. The new economy is alive and well, and most of the changes lie ahead.
    • What is the probability of a "double-dip" recession where the first dip is caused by a fall in business investment, and the second dip by a fall in consumption?
    • Everyone wants to know the timing of a recovery, but timing is what economists do worst.
    • Today's business scandals are NOT abnormal. They occur at the end of every bubble.
    • Today's environment requires companies to have a chief knowledge officer.

Educational Technology and Institutional Change at MIT

Presented by Hal Abelson
Prof. of Computer Sci. and Eng.
Co-chair, MIT Council on Educational Technology
http://www-swiss.ai.mit.edu/~hal/hal.html

Microsoft Corporation and the MIT Alumni Club of Puget Sound are pleased to present an exciting and informative evening with Hal Abelson.

MIT is undergoing its most active period of educational change in thirty years. Much of this change is made possible by information technology, and it is being realized through programs such as MIT OpenCourseware and through research and education alliances with Microsoft http://mit.edu/cet/init/icampus.html, http://swissnet.ai.mit.edu/projects/i-campus/, Hewlett-Packard, Cambridge University, Singapore, and others. These efforts are coordinated by MIT's Council on Educational Technology. In this talk, Hall will survey MIT's educational technology activities and the strategic direction behind them.

The strategy emphasizes four themes:

    1. transforming the classroom experience to promote active learning
    2. furthering the university's public mission by strengthening the intellectual commons
    3. exploring new modes of inter-institutional collaboration made possible by Web services and other information technology
    4. creating and supporting an extended university community

This event is being hosted by Microsoft and is open to MIT alum at Microsoft, MIT Alumni Club of Puget Sound, and MIT alum in the community-at-large.

Date: Monday, September 23
Time: 6-9 pm
Where: Microsoft Conference Center, Microsoft Campus, Redmond

Dinner will be hosted by Microsoft.

MIT Enterprise Forum

It's easy to get lost in the masses at the highly popular enterprise forum. To create a sense of community for alums, we have reserved a table at the forum for MIT Club of Puget Sound members.

The MIT Enterprise Forum of the Northwest is pleased to present a very special evening with Guy Kawasaki. Guy is a founder of Garage Technology Ventures and has written several highly praised books on business and entrepreneurship including Rules for Revolutionaries and How to Drive your Competition Crazy. He has also written regular columns for both Forbes and MacWorld magazines

MIT AUTHORS AT THE NORTHWEST BOOKFEST

There are two authors to look for at the Bookfest this weekend: Robert Wallace Blake, MIT '41, who wrote Bayonets and Bougainvilleas, and Steven Pinker, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at MIT, who wrote The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature .

In addition, Steve will appear on the Richard Hugo stage at the Bookfest on Saturday at 12 noon. He will also read at Seattle's University Book Store on Friday at 7 pm.

Descriptions of the books can be found at our site: http://alumweb.mit.edu/clubs/pugetsound/events.html#021019_books

Bayonets and Bougainvilleas
Robert Wallace Blake, MIT '41, a Seattle resident and life member of the American Legion, has written and published a book about the life of his father, Seattle native and hero of three wars, Major General Robert Blake, USMC. Robert shares the stories his father told him, of hand-to-hand combat during the First and Second World Wars. He also tells the story of growing up during peace time as a Marine Corps dependent on and off posts across the U.S. and around the world. Robert, the son, followed in his father's footsteps, serving as a Naval Aviator during WWII.

The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature
Our conceptions of human nature affect every aspect of our lives, from the way we raise our children to the political movements we embrace. Yet just as science is bringing us into a golden age of understanding human nature, many people are hostile to the very idea. They fear that a biological understanding of the mind will be used to justify inequality, subvert social change, dissolve personal responsibility and strip life of meaning and purpose. In The Blank Slate, Pinker retraces the history that led people to view human nature as dangerous, and unsnarls the moral and political debates that have entangled the idea along the way. Steven Pinker is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at MIT.

HAPPY HOUR IN SEATTLE

Happy Hour falls on the first Wednesday of the month.

This month we return to the Blue Star Cafe and Pub, a popular locale in the past. It is a time to relax in a friendly environment, meet alum of all ages and backgrounds, and network. So come for a drink and a bite to eat.

Keith Ronnholm will informally (on a laptop) be showing slides of his recent trip to the Pacific on a NOAA Research vessel. Last year, Keith invited us to NOAA to hear how El Nino's are detected by monitoring meteorological and subsurface oceanographic measurements via the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) array of 70 buoys. This year, Keith went to sea to help repair and maintain the instrumentation and sensor packages on these buoys.

It's not typical to register for Happy Hour, but if more than 20 people are coming because they want to see Keith's slides and hear more about the trip, then we will schedule an actual event with a projection system (rather than cycling through groups of 3 people around the laptop). For those who register, we will let you know on Tuesday, April 1st if an actual event will be planned. If so, come to Happy Hour anyway. If you do not hear from us, that means that Keith will be at Happy Hour.

Please register HERE.

June 26 MIT/WELLESLEY SOCIAL EVENT

We hope you will join us for a Prix Fixe dinner at Cassis French Country Bistro of Capitol Hill. Reservations will be taken through Friday, June 20th.

Date: Thursday June 26th
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Cost: $28
Place:
Cassis Bistro
2359 10th Ave E
Seattle, WA 98102

Please, email your reservation by FRIDAY, JUNE 20th to Alison Barnes at Alison@MelicDadayan.com

Cassis Bistro features a $28 prix fixe dinner before 7:00 p.m. Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the summer. For this price one can order three courses (including dessert), or two courses with wine. There is a choice of 4-5 items for each course.

The Seattle Weekly writes, "Inspired (but not slavishly) by traditional French café cooking, the menu changes minimally with the seasons: You can always count on finding the Mediterranean fish soup (more like a garlicky, fragrant stew), the dangerously succulent pommes frites, and perfectly roasted chicken or sauteed calf's liver. The daily specials (cassoulet Monday, coq au vin Tuesday) are exquisite exercises in essential French country fare."

Cassis is located on north Capitol Hill, just south of 520 on 10th Ave E. Take the Roanoke exit from 520 or I-5 southbound, or Lakeview Boulevard from I-5 northbound.
Mapquest link.

There is a small parking lot behind Cassis on E. Miller (Cassis is on the corner of E. Miller and 10th Ave E., head west on E. Miller, and turn left at the end of the building into the lot). Additional on street parking is best found along 10th Ave E and in the neighborhoods surrounding Cassis.

Bon Appetit! We hope to see you there!

July 8 MIT CLUB PICNIC PLANNING PARTY

Our picnic is a great success each year because of those who help out. It's easy to help - we have a list of things that need to get done, pass the list around, and you decide what you'd like to do. The planning party is also a great time to relax and socialize.

Some of the tasks we have include:
- inviting newly admitted students and their families
- inviting the teachers we are sending to MIT
- going food shopping (which the club reimburses)
- bringing coolers and ice
- bringing barbecue utensils
- bringing name tags & markers
- bringing games
and more...

Date: Tuesday, July 8
Time: 6:30 PM
Place: Shamiana Resturant (Indian)
10724 NE 68th St
Kirkland, WA
(425) 827-4902

This event is free of charge and open to all alums, both club members and non-members, and their families.
