ROBOFISH and UPOP - 2 exciting topics in one evening! Professor Dick Yue '74 is the Associate Dean of Engineering and Professor of Hydrodynamics & Ocean Engineering at MIT. He directs the Vortical Flow Research Laboratory and co-directs the OE Testing Tank Facility. His main research contributions are in theoretical and computational hydrodynamics. He is internationally recognized for his expertise on ocean and coastal wave dynamics, and for his extensive work in nonlinear wave mechanics and large-amplitude motions and loads on ships and offshore structures. On March 4th, Dick will take us into some of his seminal research on fish motion and propulsion which is paving the way for radically improved means of moving ships and underwater vehicles. This promises to be very interesting! Dick was also the originator of the MIT OpenCourseWare concept and its formulation. His focus now is on the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP). He is the Faculty Director of this new program that will potentially transform engineering education by providing sophomores with special training and industry-based work experiences. Happy Hour falls on the first Wednesday of the month. This month we return to the Blue Star Cafe and Pub, a popular locale in the past. It is a time to relax in a friendly environment, meet alum of all ages and backgrounds, and network. So come for a drink and a bite to eat. Keith Ronnholm will informally (on a laptop) be showing slides of his recent trip to the Pacific on a NOAA Research vessel. Last year, Keith invited us to NOAA to hear how El Nino's are detected by monitoring meteorological and subsurface oceanographic measurements via the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) array of 70 buoys. This year, Keith went to sea to help repair and maintain the instrumentation and sensor packages on these buoys. It's not typical to register for Happy Hour, but if more than 20 people are coming because they want to see Keith's slides and hear more about the trip, then we will schedule an actual event with a projection system (rather than cycling through groups of 3 people around the laptop). For those who register, we will let you know on Tuesday, April 1st if an actual event will be planned. If so, come to Happy Hour anyway. If you do not hear from us, that means that Keith will be at Happy Hour. Please register HERE. Date: Wednesday, April 2 Location: Directions and drinks/food menu here. Questions? Please contact Judy Stein at or at 206-427-1767 |
