Digital Computing at the Institute for Advanced Study, 1945-1958 The digital universe consists of two kinds of bits: differences in space and differences in time. Digital computers are devices that translate between these two forms of information--structure and sequence--according to definite rules. Exactly 59 years ago, John von Neumann and a small group of nonconformists--who started out by building their own workbenches next to the boiler room in the basement of Fuld Hall--launched a project to do this at electronic speed. The resulting architecture and coding has descended directly to almost all computers now in use. With a bare 5 kilobytes of high-speed storage, von Neumann and his colleagues tackled previously intractable problems ranging from thermonuclear explosions, stellar evolution, and long-range weather forecasting to cellular automata, genetic coding, and the origins of life. Why Princeton? Why not MIT? Von Neumann succeeded in jump-starting the computer revolution by bringing engineers into the den of the mathematicians, rather than by bringing mathematicians into a den of engineers. The stored-program computer, as delivered by von Neumann, broke the distinction between numbers that *mean* things and numbers that *do* things. Our universe would never be the same. Dinner will be catered by our favorite truffle café, La Buona Tavola, and will include salad, entrée, dessert, coffee and soft drinks. Please indicate on your registration if you require a vegetarian selection. Date: Tuesday, November 9, 6:30 PM Dinner, 7:00 PM Presentation

| Dec 15 | MIT ENTERPRISE FORUM PRESENTS A BIOTECH FORUM WITH LEE HARTWELL Baking Bread, Brewing Beer, and Curing Cancer? Lee Hartwell's ground-breaking research with the yeast cells used for everyday tasks like baking bread and brewing beer have lead to a more fundamental understanding of how cancer cells reproduce, and ultimately how cancer may be treated. For his research he was awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize in physiology/medicine. Dr. Hartwell’s newest project involves forming an international consortium of laboratories to tackle the problem of identifying biomarkers in blood that could reveal the presence of breast cancer. Advances in technology combined with information from the human genome project offer the possibility for a major advance in biomarker discovery. The consortium members will apply different approaches to the problem while sharing biological materials and comparing results. For more information or to register, visit http://www.mitwa.org/. Koss I'd like to invite you to join the Club's officers as we discuss the Club's progress and evaluate our programs and plans for the coming year. We will be serving pizza, so please RSVP so that we can order enough for everyone. I think it's time we revamp our club organization. We're going to try to be more explicit about the duties of each committee and have roles for more volunteers to be involved to implement current or new club programs. In particular, we really need help in Treasury and Program (Events) committees. And I'd also like to get started on some new projects: a club newsletter (twice/year mailing), and an online member directory. This will be a great meeting to attend if you want to get more involved with club activities as I'll be presenting an overview of the club committees and we'll be deciding how to organize the work for the next year. Date: Wednesday, February 9, 6:30 - 9:00 PM Location: Bellevue Regional Library Cost: Free RSVP: Please RSVP online by February 7 See you next week, |

| Mar 8 | MIT PROFESSOR
ALAN EPSTEIN ON “THE MIT MICROENGINE PROJECT” – MARCH
8 Please join us as we welcome Professor Alan Epstein
to Seattle for his presentation on “The MIT MicroEngine Project: Shirt-button Sized
Jet Engines, Generators, Rocket Engines, and Coolers”. Dr. Epstein
is the R.C. Maclaurin Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Head of
the Division of Propulsion and Energy Conversion and Director of the MIT
Gas Turbine Laboratory. He has been on the MIT faculty since 1980. His technical interests focus on energy conversion, propulsion, and turbomachinery - including: micro heat engines, unsteady flow in turbomachinery, turbine heat transfer, advanced instrumentation, hydroacoustics, and the application of active control to aeropropulsion systems. Dr. Epstein has over 70 technical publications in these fields. In addition to being an active consultant to the gas turbine and aerospace industries, Dr. Epstein has received, among others, four best paper awards from the International Gas Turbine Institute, and the ASME Gas Turbine Award. He is a member of the NRC Air Force Science and Technology Board, is a Fellow of the AIAA, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. The presentation will cover MIT’s efforts to develop micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS)-based gas turbine engines, turbogenerators, and rocket engines. Fabricated in large numbers in parallel using semiconductor manufacturing techniques, these engines on a chip are based on micro-high speed rotating machinery with power densities approaching those of their more familiar, full-sized brethren. The MIT micro-gas turbine is a 1 cm diameter by 3 mm thick silicon heat engine designed to produce 10-20 W of electric power (or enough thrust to propel the 6 inch long MIT jet powered micro air vehicle). Later versions may produce up to 100 W. The thumbnail sized MIT rocket engine is designed to produce 3-5 pounds of thrust with application ranging from large space satellites to very small rockets. This technology extends to other applications as well such as chemical laser, coolers, pumps, and fans on-a-chip. The presentation will be held at the Seattle Public Library. Finger foods and soft drinks will be served. Please register early to reserve your spot and save $5! You can also read Professor Epstein's paper Millimeter-Scale, MEMS Gas Turbine Engines here. | May 10 | MT. ST. HELENS - UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL - MAY 10
Twenty five years ago, Mt. St. Helens awoke with a volcanic blast that dramatically impacted Washington state and changed geological thinking about volcanos. One of our club members, Keith Ronnholm, was a UW graduate student in geophysics at the time, and was camped 10 miles to the northeast when Mt. St. Helens blew. He witnessed and photographed the initial stages of the lateral blast, and then escaped to the north through a hailstorm of falling rocks and ash. His photographs of the eruption have appeared in textbooks, newspapers, magazines, and video documentaries. Keith recently completed filming interviews for upcoming programs on the Weather Channel and National Geographic. Over the years, Keith has amassed a comprehensive collection of images of the initial eruption of Mt. St. Helens taken by other eyewitnesses as well. Come hear Keith tell the story of the May 18th, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens and share his images. He'll mix in some science too!! Date: Tuesday, May 10 This event is open to MIT Club members and their guests. If you have not yet joined the club, we look forward to welcoming you as a member. Please register online. If you have questions, please contact Lola Ball at 425-531-0348 or . |
