Membership

Dear MIT Club of Palm Beach Stakeholder,

It's that time of year again- when we ask you to pay the annual $25 dues and join the MIT Club of Palm Beach. Dues payment can occur electronically via Smartrans or using the attached form and US Mail to Club Secretary Treasurer Bob Wasserman.

The club has three main objectives:
1. Bring together the local MIT alumni community by hosting events that we think reflect an abiding interest in science.
2. Increase the bond between alumni and the Institute by having speakers from MIT
3. Involve local alumni in the local high school community by sponsoring high school teachers participation in summer programs through the Science Technology Engineering Program and by providing judges for local science fairs.

To that end, this past year we had Dana Mead, Chairman of the MIT Corporation; Li-Huei Tsai and Robert DeSimone respectively from the Picower Institute and McGovern Institute as well as lectures by local alumni Claude Gerstle M.D. on embryonic stem cells and Mark Tunick, political science professor and dean at FAU, discussing the balance between privacy and GPS surveillance technology. For our community outreach we sponsored high school teacher Scott Howard for the MIT SEPT program. In 2009-2010 we will continue with interesting speakers and include more social gatherings as means for networking, collaboration, and reflection on the Institute. We will also be cohosting some programs with other alumni groups to further extend the benefits of membership. We in the MIT Palm Beach Club look for alumni contributors as officers, board members, and for MIT 10 (more recently graduated MIT Alumni having finished in the last 10 years) coordinators. Officers and Board Members will meet in October with conference call-in available.

Our dues remain very modest. In fact all of last year's dues went to Scott's scholarship and our event pricing merely intends to break even. We think you will find the events for the coming year interesting and agree that our objectives are worth supporting. Next year's events will start in November with a daytime weekend gathering at the Morikami Museum in Delray Beach.

Please join the club now so that we can more efficiently budget and plan upcoming events.

Best regards,

John Thomas, President
Bob Wasserman, Treasurer

Claude Gerstle, Events
Wil Blake, Communications
