Sailors Ahoy!
On Friday, October 12, 2007, MIT joined other IVY league alumni for a Inter-University Regatta, organized by Dov Hoch of UPenn. The 10 person boats held alumni from Harvard, Penn, Columbia, MIT, Yale and "the rest".
The MIT sailors, Joshua Gold, Heidi and David Goldfarb, Galya Racine and Dan Grotsky, Joshua Gold, Sara Beck (wife of alum Ben Svetitsky), Dave Kessler, Michal Ruchelsman and our photographer Michael Starr, were aided by Ram, an instructor from Sea-Gal, the yacht club which owns the boats.
Joshua Gold took the helm and the rest of us shared the duties of manuevering the jib and main sails. After a 15 min short course on how to maneuver the boat, we were through the 'gate' (2 buoys) and on the course (a three buoy route)!
The boat sailed beautifully and we passed the Yale boat at one point, err, while it was stopping for a swim. But hey, later we also stopped for a swim. At 12:00, Ram turned on the motor and brought us in.
We may not have won, but we certainly enjoyed the sailing. Watch out Yale, next year will be our turn!
Good Times and Good Food for Sukkot
During Hol HaMoed Sukkot, Heidi and David Goldfarb (both class of '84), hosted MITers and a few others for a BBQ.
We had a nice-sized crowd with alum ranging from class of '53 all the way through '07.
The old-timers included Heidi's visiting parents, Herb and Debby Brun; David Klepper; and a retired couple, both formerly professors at TAU, Barbara and Lawrence Lewin.
There was also a nice group of real young alum (One, Chaim Kutnicki, works for David) and the other two (Sofie Rappaport and Kayla Jacobs are learning at Pardes for the year). Edmond Chalom, a recent PhD alum, showed up with his family.
From the 70's, we had Aryeh and Ethel-Sherry Weiss and Ben and Sara Svetitsky. And two unrelated Lerners - Dan and Reuven, who graduated in the 80's and 90's.
Galya Racine and Dan Grotsky came with their little one, Ella.
A highlight of the party was when David accidentally knocked over an open bottle of ginger ale. It hit the ground, fizzed up, and then accelerated like a jet right out of the succah. Anyplace else, people would have either complained about the mess or helped to clean up. Here, a bunch of us stood agape, marveling at the physics of the event! Ah, MIT!
