Welcome

July, 2006

The MIT Club of Hartford wants to inform you of our exciting happenings in the Greater Hartford area and invite you to join us. I am certain you will appreciate our activities. We concentrate on programs to improve our community and enrich our lives. Our goal is to combine the resources of MIT with the knowledge and experience of our alumni to make a positive contribution to our community.

One of our significant recent activities is the establishment of a scholarship for high school teachers to attend MIT's Science and Engineering Program for Teachers (SEPT). SEPT brings high school math and science teachers to MIT for one week of training, seminars and networking on new methods and technologies in secondary education. The cost to attend SEPT is $750. The scholarship fund the Club has established will allow you to designate a portion of your annual tax deductible Alumni Fund contribution for this purpose. Never before have you been able to designate make your alumni fund contribution in such a way that it directly benefits our local community.

This year's Club events will include our upcoming picnic at Laurel Island, our annual Toast to IAP, a fall gala featuring a distinguished speaker (last year we had MIT President Susan Hockfield), an October Science dinner with Trinity College featuring a talk by MIT Professor Dick Yue on robotics, our Admitted students dinner, plus monthly Games night (see calendar of events on reverse).

Many of our Club's members have been able to make their own positive contribution to our community by participation in the Club's sponsored workdays with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Other planned outlets for our civic contributions is a program being planned to connect our alums with young people in the area who can benefit from the tutoring and mentoring skills that MIT alums possess.
