Ivy Chefs A Recipe for Success for Citizen Schools |
Ivy Chefs A Recipe for Success for Citizen SchoolsCombine four Boston area chefs from Ivy League schools with four energetic young people, stir in 150 Ivy Plus alumni, and let simmer in the Grand Ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. It's a recipe for success as those who attended "Taste of the Ivies - An Evening with Ivy League Chefs" on March 21st can attest. Amanda Lydon (Harvard), Chef de Cuisine at Truc, Daniele Baliani (Columbia), formerly Chef de Cuisine at Pignoli, Jody Adams (Brown), Chef/Owner of Rialto and Red Clay, and Joanne Chang (Harvard), Pastry Chef at Mistral prepared a fabulous four course dinner with paired wines selected and provided by Classic Wine Imports. The event was coordinated by Brad Hudson (Penn and Cornell), CEO of the Bay Tower Room and hosted by Jack Dresser (Cornell), Chairman of Ivy-Plus Alumni. Executive chef Richard Rayment of the Ritz-Carlton, orchestrated kitchen operations. Proceeds from the event were donated to Citizen Schools, a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1995 to educate children and build strong communities. The current core activity of Citizen Schools is a network of after-school and summer programs in the Boston Public Schools. These programs have engaged more than 1,500 students (ages 9 to 14) and 1,200 community volunteers in a series of career-related learning apprenticeships. The apprenticeships challenge kids and adults alike to gain skills and understanding while creating products and performances that add value to the community. For "Taste of the Ivies", four students from the program worked in the kitchen - one apprentice for each chef. After dinner, Latoya Tomlinson spoke about her accomplishments that evening in the kitchen and in other programs with Citizen Schools. Eric Schwarz, co-founder and president of Citizen Schools, spoke about the program. Each program has a final project, called a "wow" as in "Wow! I didn't think a kid could do that!". Jody Adams spoke for the all the chefs saying it had been a great experience to work with each other and to work with their apprentices. The atmosphere at the Ritz was elegant, the service was impeccable, and the dining was superb. The guests, chefs, apprentices, and Citizen Schools rated it a five star evening.
