MIT Public Service Center's Community Service Work-Study (CSWS)

Dear MIT Alumni,

MIT students are always looking for new experiences. As alumni, you could be a wonderful resource for current studentsıand for your local communityıby helping to locate summer job opportunities with:
- nonprofit organizations
- educational programs
- governmental agencies

Community Service Work-Study (CSWS) is a program that makes it possible for students receiving financial aid to perform meaningful service while receiving a paycheck. It's also great for community organizations, who receive a 75% reduction in the cost of the wages thanks to Federal work-study support.

While most CSWS students find positions in Cambridge during term time, it is also possible for students to work anywhere around the country during the summer and IAP. If you know of an organization in your area that would be interested in advertising a summer internship or job to MIT students, please share this information with them. There may also be "hardship funding" available for community organizations that are not able to afford even 25% of a studentıs wages.

The benefits to an organization are numerous. Here are a few:
- access to problem solvers and creative thinkers
- a highly motivated student to tackle a project no one else has been able to find time for
- the ability to influence a studentıs view of the nonprofit world
- a 75% discount in the cost of student labor

The benefits to a current MIT student are remarkable as well:
- work experience
- understanding of new communities and their issues
- seeing the results of the work he or she contributes to an organization
- opportunities to apply lessons from the classroom
- travel in another part of the country

As we pilot this summer program, we hope that it will be a way to help you to help MIT. We are excited to start offering students the opportunity to come to work in your area for the summer, and we hope that you are too. Please get in touch if you know of any community organizations that could employ a CSWS student!

And if you would be interested in acting as a mentor to one of these students, please ask me for more information about that too.

Thank you,

Linden McEntire

2008 Annual Meeting & Elections

April 16, 2008, 5:30 PM-9:30 PM

Jade Garden Buffet
1012 Taylor Ave
Towson, MD 21286-8312
United States

Event Contact: Yolanda Fan (mitbaltimore@gmail.com)

On Wed April 16, 2008, we had our first annual meeting & elections (since the Club was restarted in late 2006) at Jade Garden Buffet in Towson, MD.

Named Baltimore's Best Buffet by City Paper, Jade Garden's diverse and yummy buffet was enjoyed by all.

In a short business meeting starting at 6:30pm, we discussed the State of the Club and passed the slate of Board of Directors (12-0-0). Board transitions July 1, 2008.

Following the business meeting, we were treated to a delightful talk titled "Zen & the Art of Negotiation: Being Stress-Free" by Philip L Marcus '63, a business transaction & intellectual property attorney.

Through this talk, we learned to control our stress and anger through the Zen technique of "Mindfulness." Phil also taught us how to negotiate successfully with situationally, tactically and chronically neurotic people, how they differ, why they act as they do, and how to maintain your serenity and make deals with them without screaming or cowering in a corner.

Click here to download the slate of Board of Directors that was passed.

"I want MIT to be the dream of every child who wants to make the world a better place." -- Dr. Susan Hockfield

MIT President Susan Hockfield was our honored guest at a cocktail hour reception for alumni in the greater Baltimore area on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at the Engineer's Club in Mount Vernon.

It was a great opportunity for us to meet MIT's president and she was able to personally speak to most of the attendees if just for a minute or two.

Over 100 MIT Alumni, Parents, and Friends joined us for this fantastic event!

We began our evening with a chance to talk informally with the President and enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Yolanda Fan '02 spoke for a few minutes about the Club's success in it's first year and introduced President Hockfield, who offered formal remarks at 6:45 pm. Dr. Hockfield shared her vision on the future of the Institute, including new international alliances, the new cancer center, leading edge research in the life sciences, the MIT Energy Initiative, and the Campaign for Students.

The ceramic blue crab wine holder, holding a canister of Old Bay seasoning, was presented to Dr. Hockfield by Barry Margulies '89, on behalf of the MIT Club of Baltimore, and Monica Ellis '91 (Director of the Alumni Fund at the MIT Alumni Association) concluded the evening by thanking everyone and encouraging the attendees to volunteer with the Club.

Thank you to our generous sponsors:

Legal Seafoods donates to MIT Club of Baltimore

Legal Seafoods Logo Most of us have good memories of meals at Legal Seafoods while we were at MIT (usually when parents were in town and picking up the tab). Remember their signature dishes like clam chowder, wood-grilled swordfish, steamed clams, and 2-pound lobsters that can be ordered baked and stuffed with scallops and shrimp? Mmm...But did you know that there is a Legal Seafoods in Baltimore's Inner Harbor? There is plenty of garage parking nearby so check it out sometime; you'll feel like you're back in Boston.

The Helmand Restaurant, located in historic Mount Vernon, offers tantalizing Afghan food in an elegant setting. The menu is filled with flavorful, authentic concoctions such as mantwo, a homemade pastry shell filled with onions and beef and topped with carrots, yellow split peas and beef sauce. Notable sides include chopped eggplant with tomato and onion, and pan-fried baked baby pumpkin. The restaurant's candlelit and muted atmosphere gives it the feel of a swanky eatery with exorbitant prices, but the Helmand remains so reasonably priced that it is a mainstay restaurant for impressing dates or treating friends without putting a hole in your wallet.

Pazo is located in a rustic yet chic two-floor venue with an open kitchen, plush booths, mezzanine dining and a posh-meets-earthy bar/lounge. The dishes, drawn from peasant traditions of Spain, the Italian islands and the south of France, tend toward the garlicky and assertive, and come in either small-plate or entree sizes; multi-course Catalan or Sicilian-style meals for two are also available, as are feasts for six or ten people. And there are plenty of choices for vegetarians!

MIT: Happy New Year!

Dear fellow Baltimore-area MIT alumni:

Happy New Year and welcome to the MIT Club of Baltimore!

I want to thank all of you who responded to the survey we sent out last year to gauge your interest in starting an MIT Club in Baltimore. The response was overwhelming and a core group of 20 volunteers has been hard at work to get the MIT Club of Baltimore off the ground. We have a wide variety of events planned out for the upcoming year, including facility tours, happy hours, Red Sox @ Camden Yards, fall crab feast, wine tasting, career development seminars, faculty speakers, joint Ivy Plus events, and joint events with the MIT Club of DC. I encourage you all to check out our new website to keep up to date with what is going on: http://alumweb.mit.edu/clubs/baltimore

In another week or so, the MIT Alumni Association will be sending you a letter from Barry Margulies '89, Vice President of Membership that describes the benefits of joining the MIT Club of Baltimore. I hope that you will join the Club and that I will see you at our first event, a happy hour in February (date and location to be finalized).

We will be using this email list about once a month to announce events and to keep you posted on any events that may have been planned on short notice. I, and the rest of the Board of Directors, look forward to meeting you! Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions, concerns or ideas about the Club and how we can work together.

Best regards,

Yolanda Fan '02
President

Spring 2006 Survey Summary

Helmand Restaurant donates to MIT Club of Baltimore

Helmand Restaurant Logo On May 10, 2006, Helmand Restaurant generously donated a "dinner for two" gift certificate to efforts to reorganize the MIT Club of Baltimore. This gift certificate was given to one lucky alum, Barry Blumenfeld '68, who responded to the survey of May 2006 to gauge interest in restarting the Club.

The Helmand Restaurant, located in historic Mount Vernon, is named after Afghanistan's longest and most important river (and also the owners' first-born son!) It is one of several restaurants nationally that are owned and operated by members of one of Afghanistan's most famous and prominent families. In the last decade, these restaurants helped introduce and popularize Afghan cuisine to America. Experience the cuisine the Zagat Survey says, "beckons with "exotic" dishes that consistently hit the mark. You must try the kaddo. It'll forever change how you think about pumpkins. And the chopan, charcoaled rack of lamb at its absolute zenith -- graciously served by an attentive staff in an elegant room; to boot. It's an incredible value."

As Baltimore Magazine put it, "With its vaulted ceiling and wrought-iron chandeliers, its two-story-tall curtains and its live DJ, here was the place that would make even a jaded Manhattanite adjust his or her hairdo upon entering." The wide assortment of small plates (or tapas) and extensive wine selection will surely satisfy even the most discriminating diner.

On May 4, 2006, Pazo Restaurant generously donated a "dinner for two" gift certificate to efforts to reorganize the MIT Club of Baltimore. This gift certificate was given to one lucky alum, Kevin O'Connell '85, who responded to the survey of May 2006 to gauge interest in restarting the Club.
