On Wed April 16, 2008, we had our first annual meeting & elections (since the Club was restarted in late 2006) at Jade Garden Buffet in Towson, MD.
Named Baltimore's Best Buffet by City Paper, Jade Garden's diverse and yummy buffet was enjoyed by all.
In a short business meeting starting at 6:30pm, we discussed the State of the Club and passed the slate of Board of Directors (12-0-0). Board transitions July 1, 2008.
Following the business meeting, we were treated to a delightful talk titled "Zen & the Art of Negotiation: Being Stress-Free" by Philip L Marcus '63, a business transaction & intellectual property attorney.
Through this talk, we learned to control our stress and anger through the Zen technique of "Mindfulness." Phil also taught us how to negotiate successfully with situationally, tactically and chronically neurotic people, how they differ, why they act as they do, and how to maintain your serenity and make deals with them without screaming or cowering in a corner.

"I want MIT to be the dream of every child who wants to make the world a better place." -- Dr. Susan Hockfield
MIT President Susan Hockfield was our honored guest at a cocktail hour reception for alumni in the greater Baltimore area on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at the Engineer's Club in Mount Vernon.
It was a great opportunity for us to meet MIT's president and she was able to personally speak to most of the attendees if just for a minute or two.
Over 100 MIT Alumni, Parents, and Friends joined us for this fantastic event!
We began our evening with a chance to talk informally with the President and enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Yolanda Fan '02 spoke for a few minutes about the Club's success in it's first year and introduced President Hockfield, who offered formal remarks at 6:45 pm. Dr. Hockfield shared her vision on the future of the Institute, including new international alliances, the new cancer center, leading edge research in the life sciences, the MIT Energy Initiative, and the Campaign for Students.
The ceramic blue crab wine holder, holding a canister of Old Bay seasoning, was presented to Dr. Hockfield by Barry Margulies '89, on behalf of the MIT Club of Baltimore, and Monica Ellis '91 (Director of the Alumni Fund at the MIT Alumni Association) concluded the evening by thanking everyone and encouraging the attendees to volunteer with the Club.
Thank you to our generous sponsors:

Letter from the MIT-Baltimore Club President
Dear fellow Baltimore-area MIT alumni:
Happy New Year and welcome to the MIT Club of Baltimore!
I want to thank all of you who responded to the survey we sent out last year to gauge your interest in starting an MIT Club in Baltimore. The response was overwhelming and a core group of 20 volunteers has been hard at work to get the MIT Club of Baltimore off the ground. We have a wide variety of events planned out for the upcoming year, including facility tours, happy hours, Red Sox @ Camden Yards, fall crab feast, wine tasting, career development seminars, faculty speakers, joint Ivy Plus events, and joint events with the MIT Club of DC. I encourage you all to check out our new website to keep up to date with what is going on: http://alumweb.mit.edu/clubs/baltimore
In another week or so, the MIT Alumni Association will be sending you a letter from Barry Margulies '89, Vice President of Membership that describes the benefits of joining the MIT Club of Baltimore. I hope that you will join the Club and that I will see you at our first event, a happy hour in February (date and location to be finalized).
We will be using this email list about once a month to announce events and to keep you posted on any events that may have been planned on short notice. I, and the rest of the Board of Directors, look forward to meeting you! Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions, concerns or ideas about the Club and how we can work together.
Best regards,
Yolanda Fan '02
President
