Professor Edward "Ted" Gibson of the MIT Department of Linguistics describes language and cognition among an isolated Western Amazonian tribe, the Piraha. This group has no counting words including no concept of ýone.ý
How do they communicate? How do they pass calculus or even algebra?
These and other more penetrating questions relative to this phenomenon are addressed by Professor Gibson who heads MIT's Ted Lab. The research on the Piraha tribe has been selected as the 39th most top science story of 2008 by Discover Magazine where you may read a preview at Discover Magazine.
Toast to IAP 2008
For another year we had a great event with our local MIT10 alumni (1998-2007) as we gathered once again to celebrate Independent Activities Period (IAP). We enjoyed the company of new and old friends while toasting to the 'Tute and IAP!
Our Toast to IAP was on on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 from 8-10 PM at The Globe (which alas is now closed!).
LobsterFest 2007
Lobsterfest 2007 was a great success, with our biggest crowd in several years! Ralf Deltrap did a great job with organization and lobster boiling; Robin Schlinger was a big help with cooking; and thanks also to Jim Derrick for manning the grill, to help feed the masses. Of course many thanks are due to Pete Ludovice for bringing the sound system - what a great addition to the party! I hope everyone comes out to see him at the annual MIT Comedy Night event in February.
Thanks also to all of you that attended - I know that you ALL have very busy schedules - I appreciate your ongoing interest and support of the MIT club here in Atlanta. See you at the Holiday Party in December!
October 14, 12:00pm: Ivy Polo Event at Chukkar Farms. This is one of our biggest annual events - we have had over 300 alumni attend this.
Hello Engineers,
We have created a Facebook group for us to use (Search for 'MIT10 Atlanta' on Facebook, or click the heading above.) It would be great for those of you on Facebook (or those of you who need an excuse to join Facebook) to join the group so we can actually chat among us online and see whoýs here.
Local George B. Morgan '20 Award Recipient
Sharon C. Ross Class of 65
Sharon has been an educational counselor in the Atlanta region for 35 years. Her strong and steady presence in the area has contributed greatly to this team of ECs. Sharon truly leads by example, doing whatever needs to be done quietly and efficiently. She has earned admiration and gratitude for her many years of dedicated service to the Council.
The George B. Morgan 20 Award was established in 1979 to recognize sustained excellence in all aspects of Educational Council activity, including dedication to MIT, an abiding concern for and sensitivity to the interests of prospective students, and exceptional standards of achievement and professionalism in meeting Council responsibilities. As of July 1, 2007, a total of 163 alumni have received this award.
Congrats to our own Ralf Deltrap GM'00 - He was just awarded the MIT Volunteer Honor Role of Service - one of only 16 from MIT in 2007. Each year, in conjunction with alumni and staff, the Honor Roll recognizes alumni, parents, widows, spouses, faculty, or current students for extraordinary individual performance in volunteer work completed during the year.
Ralf is the key volunteer behind the MIT Club of Atlanta's premier annual event - the Fall Lobsterfest. His astute attention to every detail has made this highly successful event an annual tradition that has been very beneficial to the club. This event attracts the largest number of local alumni.
We again will have the Lobsterfest this year. Watch our pages for an announcement soon.

Welcome Reception for President Hockfield
On March 29, 2007 The MIT Club of Atlanta was pleased to welcome Dr. Susan Hockfield, President of MIT at The Carter Center in Atlanta in her honor. Over 70 alumni and students from the Atlanta area welcomed President Hockfield and heard her uplifting talk about MIT initiatives and programs.
In addition to this website, the MIT Club of Atlanta also maintains a blog where we can get your feedback. Use the website to register for events, and use the blog to help tell us what sort of events you would like to see us put together in the future. The blog is also a forum for less serious discussion between club members, on topics like where's the best cheeseburger in Atlanta? Enjoy, and please stop in regularly.
