Talking Politics with Dr. Adam Berinsky

Dr. Adam Berinsky, MIT Associate Professor of Political Science, will speak Thursday, February 7th on the U.S. polling process. A timely topic with the presidential primaries well underway! Atlanta city councilman and MIT alumnus, Kwanza Hall will be our moderator for the evening.

The Club is pleased to acknowledge our host, Professor John Orme of the Oglethorpe University History department.

You can pay now ($20, or $5 for students) or just let us know you're coming and pay at the door ($25, or $10 for students).

Speaker Information:
Dr. Berinsky's research focuses on the political behavior of ordinary citizens. While he is primarily concerned with questions of representation and the communication of public sentiment to political elites, he has also studied the continuing power of ethnic stereotypes, the effect of voting reforms, and public opinion concerning foreign policy. Dr. Berinsky is the author of Silent Voices: Public Opinion and Political Representation in America, in which he argues that the very process of collecting information on public preferences through surveys may actually bias our picture of those preferences. He is currently completing a book on public opinion during wartime, with a focus on World War II.

Toast to IAP 2008

For another year we had a great event with our local MIT10 alumni (1998-2007) as we gathered once again to celebrate Independent Activities Period (IAP). We enjoyed the company of new and old friends while toasting to the 'Tute and IAP!

Our Toast to IAP was on on Tuesday, January 22 from 8-10 PM at The Globe

LobsterFest 2007

Lobsterfest 2007 was a great success, with our biggest crowd in several years! Ralf Deltrap did a great job with organization and lobster boiling; Robin Schlinger was a big help with cooking; and thanks also to Jim Derrick for manning the grill, to help feed the masses. Of course many thanks are due to Pete Ludovice for bringing the sound system - what a great addition to the party! I hope everyone comes out to see him at the annual MIT Comedy Night event in February.

Thanks also to all of you that attended - I know that you ALL have very busy schedules - I appreciate your ongoing interest and support of the MIT club here in Atlanta. See you at the Holiday Party in December!

Volunteer Honor Roll of Service

Volunteer Honor Role of Service Logo Congrats to our own Ralf Deltrap GM'00 - He was just awarded the MIT Volunteer Honor Role of Service - one of only 16 from MIT in 2007. Each year, in conjunction with alumni and staff, the Honor Roll recognizes alumni, parents, widows, spouses, faculty, or current students for extraordinary individual performance in volunteer work completed during the year.

Ralf is the key volunteer behind the MIT Club of Atlanta's premier annual event - the Fall Lobsterfest. His astute attention to every detail has made this highly successful event an annual tradition that has been very beneficial to the club. This event attracts the largest number of local alumni.
