Greetings from Hong Kong!
We will start with marriage-related news: Congratulations to Elizabeth Butler (Haynes), who got married to Brian Butler last September. Many alumni attended their wedding, including two in Elizabeth's bridal party, Amelia Dominque '02 and Susanna Mierau (who also submitted her class notes - see below). Elizabeth has just finished her Masters in Psychology from University of Washington and will be working on second Masters next year in teaching. After that she hopes to get a job teaching high school science and math. Congrats also to Joe Compton, who got engaged to Sarah Kringer '97 in Ceret, France. They are currently living in Chicago, and will be married on December 6, 2003 in the Carribean. Bhuvana Kulkarni, on the other hand, is already married and insists that she is just another one of those laid-off bums who is sitting around collecting unemployment. Bhuvana spent the first couple weeks of June in Northern California to see her family and for her little sister's high school graduation. She celebrated her one-year wedding anniversary on July 8 with a trip down to the Cape.
As for our travellers, Susanna Mierau, when not busy attending bridal parties (see above), is still in Oxford working on her DPhil in neuroscience. She stopped sailing for the university last year and instead took up travelling. Her favorite trip was to south India where she and her flatmate stayed with a friend's family, ate great south Indian food, and traveled to nearby temples and monuments (including a nine-hundred foot high stone statue of the Jain religion founder at the top of 600 steps!). Berta Liao is still in Taiwan, after a six-month stint at AmCham Taipei. One of her closest friends in Taiwan is Jen Hu '94. Berta is now in Corporate Communications and Marketing at United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), "the foundry of choice." Danai Kuangparichat '98 stayed with Berta when he came to Taiwan over Christmas/New Year's. He returned the favor when Berta visited Tokyo over Lunar New Year. In late February, she went back to Boston to become reaquainted with her belongings, which had been lovingly cared for by Zofia Gajdos '01 and Victor Lum '99. While in Boston, she also saw Xiaomin Mou. In late May, Peter Finin '02, his sister, and his dad, Tim Finin '71, stopped by Taiwan. Berta took them out to a night market, and Peter's sister tried betel nut, a legal stimulant sold there. In other words, if anyone is ever in that part of the world, Berta welcomes you to stay with her, even if you're a drug addict. If you would like to read more about Berta's adventures in Wonderland, I mean, er, Taiwan, she has (surprise) created a blog, http://virtualberta.net. Speaking of Taiwan, Vanessa Yen went to play in Taipei in the beginning of July with Susan Shi '98. Although the weather was terribly hot, they managed to eat a lot, go shopping, and toured the city. At of the end of July, she met up with Mary Jeon '01 and Jennie Cho '01 in D.C. In August, she heads off to San Francisco to possibly meet up with Ming Wu, Evelyn Wang and Wendy Fan.
Speaking of travelling, Brandy Karl and Jennifer Frank just got back from being groped by Disney characters in Orlando. Jen was attending a conference and Brandy mooched a ride along for the free hotel room. They went on Safari, searched endlessly for straws (literally, not figuratively), and nearly died when a little boy started yelling, "Hey Mom! He's using his wing to scratch his balls!" repeatedly about a bat. They also discovered the nectar of the gods - Amarula Cream - while enjoying what will forever be labeled as their first adult dining experience. The trip was completed with an around the (Disney) world on the monorail, with visits to the overpriced watering holes of each hotel. Courtney Berman just moved to Chicago (well, actually the suburbs in North Chicago) and is starting medical school at The Chicago Medical School. She is not looking forward to more cold winters, but is excited to be there. Tom Cork is in his last year of grad school at the Actors Studio MFA for playwriting. Soon, Tom hopes to be a celebrity, or at least steal cosmetics from Winona Ryder, or become a waiter. If anyone wants to witness genius at work, Tom's work will be produced in the spring.
As for more local news, after taking a severance package from CGEY, Mimi Su decided to work for an economic consulting firm called The Brattle Group in Cambridge. She claims that it is a pretty fun place to work and has many ties to MIT. Since moving to Central with Yolanda Fan '04, a bunch of them have been organizing various summer activities including drunken kickball. (Sounds like fun!) People who have attended these games include Ranjit Survanshi, Amir Mesarwi, Mike Trupiano, Nick Bogovitch, Justin Verde, Ay Ding, Tracy Huang '01, and others. If interested in playing with them, let her know. Speaking of unemployment (and plugging for a new company), Justin Kent was working at the Napster offspring NetMovies until recently. But the personal restructuring has given him time to pursue his night job as an EJ full time and get his company off the ground. His company makes MIDI Turntables that "let all those DJs out there evolve into new realms," such as mixing and scratching music videos. Other MIT kids that are or have been involved are Nate Janos '02 (what a cutie!), Jasper Vicenti, Kevin McCormick, and Dan Chak. Nate and Justin EJed a "killer" party in NYC on July 4th - One Nation - opening for Rabbit in the Moon, KRS-1, Christopher Lawrence, among others. They are now in production phase, and a few big names are already "psyched" to beta test. If you wanna find out more, "hit up" the website http://www.ejenterprises.tv; their company is growing so there could be room for like-minded individuals to get involved, especially with sales and marketing or DJ/VJ expertise. 2003 is the world tour - Justin hopes to see you out at a party somewhere! Speaking of the criminally insane (I'm not good with segues), Joshua Glazer ekes out a meager living weaving corn rows for World Champion Laker Brian Shaw. When not so engaged, he spends his days shooting the moon with rubber bands and counting how many sneezes it takes to fill a public telephone booth (at least 4,500 so far). He is currently married to Jennifer Connolly and even though she forgot to thank him in her best actress acceptance speech, she deeply appreciates everything he has done for her, including that time he taught her to play chess with just her tongue. Josh will be attending USC film school starting this August, where he plans to make, among other things, the world's first science fiction movie without a plot hole. Josh also admonishes me not to add my "silly line" about him making all this stuff up again. This time he swears that it is all true. Send more "true" stories along!
