class notes : august 2002

In February, Lan Chen and Cindy Su met up in New Haven to watch Sharmin Ghaznavi perform in the "2nd Year Show" at Yale Med School, where she is in the MD/PhD program. Afterwards, they ate at the elder Bush's favorite burger joint, where they encountered a very shady man and a bongo player. Lan is finishing up her second year at Columbia Med and loving the shopping and nightlife of NYC. Cindy is finishing up her first year at UMass Med, with plans of going to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands for the summer to learn Spanish and eat lots of plantains. Gillian Deutch went to Las Vegas during her spring break, and stayed at a hotel that looks like a castle that has a fire-breathing dragon and is "all medieval-like."
My favorite submission for this issue is from Martin Mbaya. He asked me for a maximum number of words, and I just gave him a random number, 500. So Martin, being the guy he is, writes 495 words - almost a novel! Here it is, with a few hundred words shaved off (sorry Martin, but there's always next month): Two years after graduation, Martin's fascination with the Internet continues. He is now based in Chicago - the city that works. It has been a roller coaster ride all the way but the MIT training has made all the difference. Through all these experiences, his favorite Bible verse (Luke 12:34) has served him well time and again - "For where your treasure is, there your heart also will be." In the summer of 2000, he teamed up with Andrew Nevins, Paul Njoroge, and Eric Traub '99 to kick off the MIT African Internet Technology Initiative (MIT-AITI) at Strathmore College in Nairobi, Kenya. In August 2000, he joined the dot-com boom by signing up with Tenfold Corporation's Chicago office, along with three other MIT graduates. Ten months later, after having survived two rounds of layoffs, he wasn't so lucky the third time round: None of the five that joined Tenfold's Chicago office works there any more. Since September 2001, he has been with his current employer, Electronic Knowledge Interchange (www.eki-consulting.com). He has been active with the Chicago chapter of BAMIT as well as the MIT Club of Chicago. Through both groups, he met a whole bunch of MIT alums that seem to be doing pretty well after graduation. Currently, the club is lining up an interesting initiative with Chicago's Public Schools. Through their activities, he is brainstorming on how to build on his college experiences in China and Japan. He recently bought his first bass guitar and real soon, hopes to be in the leagues of Sting. So far he's watched some of his favorite smooth jazz artists live including saxophonists Warren Hill, Boney James, and guitarist Norman Brown. He draws his inspiration from his Gospel music collection, Chicago's WNUA 95.5 and smoothjazz.com - live from Monterey, CA. In March 2002, he took part in the Shamrock Shuffle for the second year running, the world's largest 8K run weaving through downtown Chicago with the start and finish line just yards away from the shores of Lake Michigan. Next, he's setting his sights on the Chicago Marathon and possibly a triathlon. For more details and the latest information, check out his website www.manjamba.com.
