class notes : july 2001
by mimi yang, alumni class secretary
Hey kids! Welcome to another issue of class notes, 2000 style. Sneha Madhavan and John Reese '98 were engaged on April 21, 2000, and will be married on Aug. 4, 2001. They are both currently living in San Jose, CA, where Sneha is spending the year working with kids as part of an AmeriCorps program called City Year. They will be moving to Ann Arbor this summer, as Sneha will be starting her PhD work at the University of Michigan in the fall. They are both very excited about their wedding and their move to the Midwest. Phyllis Wen and Alvaro Rodriguez are fairing well in Houston, TX. Alvaro is working for NASA at the Johnson Space Center as a thermal analyst (although he still claims to be a musician rather than an engineer). Phyllis is working hard at Rohm and Haas as a process engineer. They are currently preparing for their upcoming wedding on July 14th, 2001, which will definitely be a blast! On March 17, 2001, Tara Brown and Christopher Martin '98 were married in Tara's hometown of Columbia, MD. In attendance at the wedding, covering 12 MIT graduation years, were (from front to back, left to right in photo) Sara Kaplan '01, Margie Tsai '99, Natalie Caputy '99, Margaret Wang, Vicki Chin '99, Anish Goel SM '99, Kristie Tate '01, Chris Martin (groom), Tara Brown (bride), Elizabeth Wang '74, Ed Wang '99, Isela Rodriguez '99, Anita Wu '99, Angela Mislowsky '99, Amy Kang, Robert Martin (father of groom) '71, Paul Ho '72, Chris Perry '99, Anthony Ku '96, Javier Femenia, Eric Nelson '98, Scott McDonald '99, Sean Tytler '98 and Nate Gleason '98. Chris and Tara are now living in Princeton, New Jersey. Chris is a PhD student at Princeton University in the department of Chemical Engineering. Tara is working in R&D at Sensors Unlimited, a small photonics device company.
Now that we are done with all the wedding-related news, here are some more class notes: Oluwamuyiwa Olubuyide will be pursuing his PhD at MIT. He will be working under Professor Judy Hoyt, and studying new device structures and fabrication techniques for Heterostructure Bipolar Transistors. He writes, "I cannot believe I am saying this...but I'm actually looking forward to another 4 years at the 'Tute...:)" Veeral Shah lives in Somerville and works at Battery Ventures in Wellesley, investing in communications infrastructure companies. He is doing really well and loving it! He writes, "If people know about any great start-ups, have them contact me at veeral@battery.com." He is also sure that I don't remember him, and says he hung out with Gaurav Tuli his freshman year. Of course I remember you, Veeral!
That's all the class notes for this issue. Since there aren't more class notes, I'll keep the class updated about other recent events and a life in the day of "me." The New York City event held at Bar #9 was a complete success! Many alums came out of the woodwork to party with the NYU Law students that were there. I even saw budding romances and phone numbers being exchanged. If that isn't incentive to come to alumni events… Don't forget to check your e-mail often for other alumni events/singles hook-ups/happy hours/networking parties. On my personal front, I recently went to China with Eric Plosky '99 and Sarah Sohm '99. We climbed the Great Wall, sneaked into the Forbidden City and trekked around trendy Shanghai. We had a blast and feasted on the indescribably delicious food. Now I'm back in New York City, living in a bigger apartment (thank god!) and working on a research project for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals! If you want to hear more things about other people instead of about me, keep those class notes coming, or else I will have no choice.
