class notes : april 2005
by mimi yang, alumni class secretary

Hello my learned scholars and erudite literati. Reunion is almost upon us, so I've taken it upon myself to inform my fellow savants of the many varied highbrow activities that the Reunion Committee has exclusively planned for the Class of 2000 this June 2-5. On Thursday night, after Reunion weekend is kicked off with Tech Night at the Pops, C2000 will be hosting a Post-Pops reading hour at Crossroads, complete with potent potables (books are optional). Friday night is reserved for the edification of our 2000 alums, as we board a boat in Boston Harbor and embark upon our "Booze Cruise," which is, of course, synonymous with intellectual enlightenment as only alcohol can provide so many of us with clarity of mind. Saturday afternoon is for our gastronomical pleasure, as we partake in "Cookout at Baker," including such delectable items as burgers, peanuts, crackerjacks, and disposable dinnerware. Yum! And of course, such food can prepare us only for one thing on Saturday night: C2000's "Sox and Vox." We hope you can find time that night to join us in cheering on the world champions Red Sox at Fenway on their quest to prove that they can win the World Series more than once every 86 years, and then in celebrating their victory at Vox Populi afterwards. You know a bar is high class when it has a Latin name. The voice of the people will be heard! And now, for your class notes:

After Michael Baker got sick of Boston, he took a trip out to California to visit some old MIT friends. People visited included, but was not limited to, Ishan Anand, Dan Good '01, Leah Nichols, Cecily Ryan, Anand Sarwate '01, and Ann Wehman '99. Michael thought that San Francisco was really interesting and expects to be back there many times next year for "conferences and such." Michael also expects to attend our Reunion in June.

It seems that MIT alums tend to gravitate towards the San Francisco Bay Area. For example, Jane Park got married this August 8th to Hien Tran, a HST MD-PhD student, at Stanford Chapel, and had a wonderful reception in San Francisco. In the bridal party were Kay Paelmo, Grace Lee and two of Hien's HST entering class of 2001 classmates, Jim Rhee and Alex Wong. They were very pleased to have such a large presence of MIT folks at their wedding, including, from our class, Shonna Coffey, Lucy Fang, Julie Wertz-Chen, Al Chen, June Kim, and Soojin Son. Many of Hien's HST entering class of 2001 classmates were also there, including Charles Hsu, Siraj Ali, David Miyamoto, Nam Yu and Jerry Tsong '97. We expect all the above-mentioned MIT alums from our class to attend our Reunion in June.

Meanwhile, not in San Francisco, Dylan Birtolo has been busy in Minnesota, where he insists that it really doesn't get any colder than Boston. "At least there's no freezing rain here!" He has been teaching martial arts at the Chikara Dojo and his biggest news is that he had a book published on December 1. It is called "The Shadow Chaser," and Dylan had been anxiously planning for its release. Finally, this proves that MIT alums can string a bunch of words together to form sentences, and even be eloquent in doing so. Congratulations, Dylan! We expect to see it on the Times best-seller list soon. We also expect Dylan to attend our Reunion in June.

Roger Chang recently became engaged to Tanis Gray, a 2002 graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design. They plan to wed the summer of 2006. Roger has been living in Jersey City for the past two years and has been working for Arup, an architectural engineering firm in New York City, where he has worked on projects such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Raleigh-Durham Airport, and the Kansas City Performing Arts Center. Roger stayed on at MIT after undergrad to finish a Masters degree in mechanical engineering with the building technology group. We will force Roger to attend our Reunion in June. Some of you may think there's a theme to this issue of Class Notes, but there really isn't (attend Reunion). I would not stoop so low to imbed a subliminal message in Class Notes (attend Reunion). So in parting, I would like thank all of our classmates for writing in (and assuring me that they will attend what promises to be the classiest Reunion ever). - Mimi Yang, secretary, 1100 Fulton St. #1, San Francisco, CA 94117; tel: 646-325-3097; e-mail: galaxie@alum.mit.edu.
