class notes : february 2004
by mimi yang, alumni class secretary
Hello classmates, and welcome to another edition of Class Notes. Jocelyn
Wiese Nelson is still employed by ExxonMobil. She is thankful
for the job since the economy has not been doing well. She has become
even more suburban since she bought a house last year and adopted
a dog a few months later. Jocelyn was in San Diego for a convention
in March and caught up with Nicole Justis, Bunnie
Huang '97, Allan Lum, Jason Switzer ’01, Marc
Sadler and Jeff LaMarque. At the end of
May, Christina Um ended her three-year stint at Goldman
Sachs to head to business school in the fall at UCLA. This past year,
Christina lived and worked in London and got to know fellow MIT alum
Mikey Fradin. She and Mikey spent the last year travelling
to places like Florence while helping each other get through business
school applications. Christina says that although living in London
had its ups and downs (the weather could be a lot better!) discount
airlines made travelling to Europe very easy. She was able to travel
to places like Paris, Budapest, Cyprus, and Rome. Finally, Nicole
Botcheos and her recently finished the three-day Inca Trail
hike in Peru. They also saw some enormous crocodiles in Costa Rica.
Christina is now looking forward to catching up with her friends in
California this fall. I recently saw Mikey at Chile’s (of all
places) and learned that Mikey is currently attending that business
school down the river from MIT. Congratulations Mikey, but don’t
turn to the dark side! Heather Crooks graduated from
the Air Force Institute of Technology in June with a Masters of Science
degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Also, her time at Wright-Patterson
Air Force Base is over, and she will be moving on to the 412th Test
Wing at Edwards Air Force Base. While she is stationed there, Heather
will be a flight commander in the F-117 test squadron. Even though
she is going to miss trees and other green things, Heather remains
very excited about moving to the Mojave Desert.
And of course, what is Class Notes without weddings? It seems like
many of us met our future spouses at MIT, despite the lament heard
among so many people about the lack of love prospects. Two Aerospace
engineers who received their SBs in 2000 have tied the knot. Julie
Wertz and Allen Chen (who both incidentally
received their Masters in 2002) were married on Aug. 9, 2003, in
Palos Verdes, CA. Many MIT alums were in attendance and partied
into the night under a full moon by the ocean. Both work for JPL
in Pasadena, CA. Julie is working there part time as she pursues
her PhD. Another all-MIT wedding took place a few days before, when
Jen Bonnell ’01 and Will Koffel were married
August 2nd on Cape Cod, MA. The weather held out mercifully and
the evening was festive. Along with the abundance of drinking, dancing,
and merriment, there were also plenty of alums in attendance. Michael
Behr ’96, Sheri Cheng ’99, Joe Cirello ’01, Frank
Dabek, John Giffin ’02, Dave Golombek ’98,
Andrew Greytak and Sarah (Rothberg) Greytak
(who also got married this year), Ryan Kershner ’98, Luke
Matkins, JC Olsson, Andrew Parker ’99
and Wen-Chia Tsai-Parker ’99, Misty Pendexter ’01, Eric
Plosky ’99, Mary Ann Rasku, Michael Ricard
’92, Monica Taylor ’01, and Mimi Yang
all attended the wedding. Travis Furrer took a
different route and married outside the MIT crowd. For the past
3.5 years since Travis graduated, he has been working as a circuit
design engineer for Intel in Portland, OR. He has done a lot of
work on the Pentium 4 and also for future products. In his spare
time, Travis enjoys running, hiking, biking, various community service
activities, and learning to play the harp. But this is not a personal
ad as Travis was married on August 10th on a beautiful day outdoors
in Carlton, OR. Ryan Pierce ’99 did an excellent job as his
best man and produced what was apparently an unforgettable bachelor
party. Jen and Calvin Lin ’98 also attended the wedding. Travis
looks forward to visiting campus again someday to see some old pals
and some new buildings.
