Multi-Cu!
ltural BBQ, Orientation 2002 This event was sponsored by
10 student organizations representing primarily Latino and Black/African-American students. The event was a welcome event for new freshman specifically, but it also served to bring members of the MIT community together to encourage interactions and celebrate our diverse community. The BBQ helped merge the various cultures by serving cultural food prepared by the respective organizations. There was also a DJ there to play a mix of music, and volleyball and other activities to promote increased opportunities for interaction. This event took place at the Kresge BBQ Pits and attracted over 500 people. The event was held on 9/3/02 and the SPICE Fund supported the event with $2,000.
Chinese Culture Week: Sponsored by the Chinese Students and Scholars Association This week-long event included movie screenings, workshops, seminars and the Chinese Culture Fair. The events were held from April 14-20th, 2003 and the SPICE Fund supported the event wit!
h $3,000.
Hip Hop@MIT - A Celebration of Unity This event was a joint initiative between Immobilare (a break-dancing student group on campus), Nu Delta fraternity, and the Office of Community Development and Substance Abuse. These groups together hosted an alcohol-free event open to the MIT community that featured a guest artist that talked about the misperceptions of hip-hop specifically in terms of substance abuse, violence, and race relations. The talk was followed by a presentation and Òopen micÓ time for students to showcase their talents. The event was held in Lobdell on 4/25/03 and the SPICE Fund supported this initiative with $2,500.
Haitian Alliance event This night consisted of Haitian artwork, professional dancing, a live band, authentic Haitian cuisine and a talent show. The event was open to the MIT community and served as a fundraiser for the Haiti Class (SP.712) which sends students to Haiti duri!

Casino Rueda Dance Party The MIT Casino Rueda group is a student group that performs, learns and promotes the Casino Rueda style of salsa dancing and Latin dance in general. This year the group is bringing the annual New England Salsa Congress to campus. The event will showcase the visiting salsa performing groups and will be followed by a dance. The event was held in La Sala on 10/24/03 and the SPICE Fund supported this initiative with $1,800.
