November/December 2008

Greetings Everyone!

Shirley Lin and Jay Moore welcomed their son, Elijah, in March 2007. They also have a daughter, Liza, now four years old. Shirley has been promoted to associate professor of chemistry at the U.S. Naval Academy while Jay continues to enjoy his position at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. Manoj “Bobby” Wunnava and his wife celebrated the birth of their second little girl on May 13, 2008 in Atlanta, GA. Ellora Renusai Wunnava came in at 5 lbs 2 oz and full term, and has been doing well and catching up to other infants her age. Her older sister Elina just turned two on June 2nd, so they are busy with two little ones still in diapers. Bobby finished his anesthesiology residency at Emory University and the whole family packed up and moved out to Chicago via Cincinnati where he will do a one-year interventional pain medicine fellowship at Rush University Medical Center. The family cannot wait for training to be done next August 2009!

Jennifer (Long) Steele finished her MBA in August from Simmons School of Management. Going to a women’s business school was really fascinating--especially in contrast with her technology career (and that little MIT thing)! As of July 14th, she will have joined Morrison Mahoney LLP as their Director of Information Technology. Steve Laramie and his wife, Sara, welcomed a son, Chace, on June 23rd. Their four year old daughter Bailee is enjoying life as a big sister as well. All is well with the family and Steve would like to say hello to everyone.

Amy Koo and her husband, Don Long, welcomed their first child, Michael Ga-Keung Long on June 25, 2008 in Redwood City, CA (see below). Amy is doing a deep dive into motherhood for four months before returning to her job at Nektar Therapeutics as a Portfolio and Strategic Planning Manager.

Michael Koo at three days old.

Erika Hanley-Onken is enjoying being back in Boston. It has barely been a year now and it finally it feels like she is settling in. Erika is a product manager at Millipore, up in Billerica, and lives in Newton. Her daughters love having their grandparents and extended family nearby, and she and her husband are loving the babysitting! (When all of their schedules align, since Erika has been traveling quite a bit during the first half of this year!) Erika thinks the blueberry picking is much better in the Northeast and Boston weather is as unpredictable as she remembered. She says hello to all alumni out there, and please keep in touch!

Lastly, I would like to apologize for mistakenly listing Hans S Cho as missing in the September/October 2008 issue. He recently submitted an update that after leaving MIT, he finished his doctorate in 2003 in the Materials Science Program at Columbia University. He then worked for Samsung doing semiconductor-related research in Kiheung, Korea for 3.5 years. He recently returned to the US and started working as a researcher at Hewlett-Packard Labs in Palo Alto, CA. Hans married Grace Namjin Kim, (course 3, ‘97) in 2000, and they have a son, Samuel, who just turned one year old.

Thank you to everyone who has submitted updates over the past few months. Please remember that you can submit updates and photos any time throughout the year to be posted on our class website, http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1995/.
