Hi Everyone!
This year's recipient of the Class of
1995 Lizette Arce-Doshi Memorial Fund is Kendra Johnson, '09. I would like to
share an excerpt from her Thank-you note… "I am writing to you in
appreciation of the support I have received for my education this year from the
Class of 1995 Lizette Arce-Doshi Memorial Fund.
MIT has been a truly amazing and life-changing experience for me thus far, and
coming here would not be possible without the generous aid I have been
receiving, so I want to truly thank you for your financial support of my
education. I am honored to have been chosen to receive this award and the
support of so many generous alumni from your class in honor of Lizette
Arce-Doshi’s commitment to leadership and service. To share a little bit about
me, I am from Wisconsin, from the medium-sized
city of Madison.
I have always been a bit of a dreamer and idealist, and over the years my
idealism has been channeled into a number of different forms. I have become
increasingly interested in traveling especially to the developing world, and
considering how I can use my education and all my opportunities to really make
a difference in the world. Here at MIT, I have been exposed to some amazing new
perspectives on the world that have refined my interests and dreams. These
perspectives came through all sorts of experiences I have had – as president of
the Western Hemisphere Project, as co-host of a weekly public affairs radio
show on WMBR 88.1 FM, MIT”s radio station, as a volunteer EMT on the campus
ambulance service, as a student in D-lab:
a series of courses focusing on appropriate technology in international
development, and as a leader in a growing student movement looking at issues of
sustainability on campus and in the world. Once
again, I would like to thank you for your contribution to my education, and
wish you all the best in your lives and following your dreams." This
is a great reminder to all of us how much our contribution to the Class of 1995
Funds can assist current students. If you are interested in making a donation,

And now some news from our classmates… Gina Kang shares that she and Doug Muir, '94, were married in 2000 and
moved from Cambridge to Los Angeles. Since then, she had a drastic career
change from being an IT consultant to a dentist. Gina graduated from UCLA
dental school last year, got her license, and has been working at the VA
Hospital in Long Beach, CA as a general dentist. She knows it
sounds really strange, but she really really loves being a dentist, and a
mom. Gina and Doug have a 2 1/2 year old son, Douglas, and they
are expecting another boy in September. Doug works for Google in Santa Monica, so it looks like they will be staying in the
Los Angeles
area for a while. Ken Lin shares that he graduated with a Masters of Library
and Information Science from San
Jose State University in May 2007.
Heidi (Shih) and Aaron (Ashford) Ashih [Shih + Ashford =
Ashih] gleefully moved back to Cambridge, after realizing their future careers
would NOT build upon their respective PhDs from Duke University. Heidi
finished medical school and her first year of internship. She is now
in her second year of psychiatry residency at Cambridge Health Alliance. Aaron
decided to become an artist, specializing in metal sculpture & installation
art. He also home-schools their 4-year-old son, Christopher Dante. Anna
(Tomassini) and Jose Plehn, '96, welcomed their first son, David Michael Plehn
on June 11, 2007 at 10:14 pm. He was born at Millard
Fillmore Suburban
Hospital in New York and weighed 6 lbs 5 oz and was 20
inches long. Maisha (Richard) Turner shares that her family (herself, husband and their
twp year old daughter) are expecting an addition in September. They took an
Alaskan cruise in June, which was nice, but warmer waters are more to their
liking. Maisha is still in Houston
and still working at Malcolm Pirnie - almost 8 years at a consulting firm and
she is considered an 'old timer'.
Thank you to everyone who has submitted updates over the
past few months. Please remember that you can submit updates and photos any
time throughout the year to be posted on our class website, http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1995/.
