As some of you may recall, our class gift to MIT was the Class of 1995 UROP Fund. I am pleased to introduce the recipients for the 2005-2006 academic year: Kristen M. Burall ’08 from Elk Grove, CA and John T. Wu ’06 from Somerville, MA.

Environmental Engineering science major (1E) Kristen M. Burrall ’08, conducted her spring 2006 UROP project, Hyperinstruments: Cognitive Evaluation, under the supervision of Professor Todd Machovar and MIT’s Department of Media Arts and Sciences. Her research focused on the development of a user interface for a new music composition program that may prove a useful clinical treatment for children with autistic spectrum disorders, specifically Asperger’s Syndrome.

John T. Wu ’06, a biology major (7), worked on his UROP project, Viscoelastic Properties of Micro-patterned Mouse Fibroblast, under the supervision of Professor Peter T. C. So in MIT’s Biological Engineering Department in the fall of 2005 and the spring of 2006. John’s research involved investigating the effect of a particular cell shape on cellular stiffness and cytoskeletal distribution, and visualizing the cytoskeletal distribution of pattern cells using fluorescent confocal microscopy.

Support for the Class of 1995 UROP Fund helps MIT ensure that the unique educational experiences offered by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program are available to students in all disciplines. Monica Ellis ’91, Director of the MIT Alumni Fund, sends her sincere thanks to the member of the Class of 1995 for their continued contributions to this fund. If you are interested in making a contribution please visit www.giving.mit.edu and designate your gift towards the Class of 1995 UROP Fund.

And now some news from our classmates…

Chalee Asavathiratham reports that he married Vicharee Vichit-Vadakan in Bangkok in December 2006. Since then, he has moved to back to the East Coast to work for Merrill Lynch as a quantities trader in New York CityJulie (Stephens) Fornaro is still with Freescale Semiconductor in Arizona. Her son Ryan is now 16 months old and is not quite walking by himself, but he is getting close, so the gate has gone up at the top of the stairs. Her husband, Al, also claims that Ryan said “spoon” for the first time recently as he handed the spoon back to Al when he was done eating.
