March/April 2006
Congratulations to our new
class officers, elected at our 10
year reunion last June and a big Thank-You to our outgoing officers.
Here is an
update on each of the new officers… President Jahnavi Swamy left
Denver last summer and moved back
to Cincinnati
for a position with Procter &
Gamble. She is amazed as much as anyone else is to have been working
for the
same company and to have kept the same email address for over 10 years.
She
writes that “It was wonderful to see many of our classmates
at the reunion in
June. I’m looking forward to seeing even more of you at the
next reunion. I’ve
volunteered to serve our class as President for the next five years. If
you
have ideas of what you would like to see from our class or from the
Institute,
please let me know via e-mail,
jahnavi@alum.mit.edu,
or by phone 303-249-0700.” Vice-President Babak Azad has returned to Los Angeles
after graduating from the Stanford GSB in 2001. His work includes a
variety of
activities, including corporate development work for Napster (the legal
one!)
and MBA admissions counseling. He is an active member of the LA Tri
Club,
currently in training for his second Ironman. Treasurer Diane Hodges
Popps
has been in Austin,
TX
since graduating from MIT. While working
for Motorola (turned Freescale Semiconductor) she earned her
Master’s in
Biomedical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.
In her free time, Popps enjoys
participating in Kuk Sool Won (Korean martial arts) and triathlons, and
hanging
out with her husband, Donovan, and 2 dogs. She just completed a term as
Class
Agent prior to becoming Class Treasurer. And lastly, I, Jennifer
(Tschudy)
Carlstrom, am the new class secretary and webmaster. I have lived in
the Bay
Area since 1997, with my husband Brian Carlstrom. Brian is in his third year in the Stanford
Computer Science PhD
program and we welcomed our second son, Daniel William Carlstrom, on
5/05/05.
Big brother Michael, age 3.5, and our two black Labs, Bonnie and Clyde, are adjusting well. As
part of my duties,
our class website has been updated and now includes all of the previous
issues
of Class Notes, as well as classmate updates received between notes
publications. Please check it out at
http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1995.
Now onto other classmate
news… After
earning his MAT at UNH in 2001, Chris Siren moved back to Massachusetts
and began teaching high school
physics. Since 2003, he’s been teaching physics and
occasionally chemistry and
astronomy at Groton-Dunstable Regional High School.
He is now close enough to Boston to play
Ultimate
Frisbee (badly) on the alumni team at MIT in the spring of 2005. John
Rodkin is getting married to Megan Hennessy in January 2006 in New Orleans.
After the
hurricane, her job as a law clerk to Edith Brown Clement relocated to Virginia for 5 months, but they
were extremely fortunate
that their apartment in New Orleans
suffered no damage and they can have the wedding as planned. They met
at the University
of Chicago,
where Megan was a law student
when Rodkin returned to finish his JD/MBA, 8 years after he started.
After
graduation in June 2005, he returned to San Francisco
and started a new software company with Leo
Chang ‘94. The company has grown to 15, and their team
includes MIT alums Matt
Esch ‘97, Jeff Marshall ‘94, Milena Krasteva
‘05 (Sloan) and Sherrett Walker ‘93. Laura Groves is back from New Zealand, now living
in Southern Maryland.
She will be taking a veterinary acupuncture course in Colorado
this winter and
is busy un-schooling her 4 year old. Amy Koo started a new job after
the 10
year reunion as Production Control Manager for Nektar Therapeutics in
San
Carlos, CA – Thanks to a nice referral from fellow
‘95er Kevin Walsh! Meanwhile,
she also started her own business in the health and wellness industry
marketing
nutritional and skincare items from USANA Health Sciences. The
supplements
worked great as she and fiancé Don Long completed their
first ever triathlons
at Pacific Grove
with the Silicon Valley
“Team in Training”, raising $8200 for the Leukemia
and
Lymphoma Society. Since Koo and Long were on a fitness kick, they
joined
classmate Steve Lin in his 12 person relay race that consisted of
running 199
miles from Calistoga to Santa Cruz over two days – Yowzers!

Amy Koo
and fiancé Don Long at the finish of the Pacific Grove
Triathlon.
Robert and Sherry (Wu) Lewis
are excited and overwhelmed
as new parents of twins. They welcomed son Derek and daughter Anna on
June 21,
2005, in Rockville,
MD.
Lewis is planning to return to her
consulting position at BearingPoint Inc within a few months. Eric Fitch and wife Filly had
triplets on Sept. 26, 2005.
Madison, Kyle, and Courtney keep their parents awake in Arlington,
MA.
Until recently, Fitch worked with Mark Lundstrom ‘92 on a
biotech start-up. Now
he is in the healthcare software industry. He can be reached at
fitch@alum.mit.edu. Kristin and Matt Cutler are happy to announce the
arrival
of Vaughan Alexander Cutler, born Oct. 25, 2005. Both baby and Kristin
are
doing great and Quentin is adjusting well to being a big brother. Michelle
(Vokac) Lynam just had a second daughter on Sept. 28, 2005. Gabriella
Britta
Lynam weighed in at 7lbs. and 4oz. Big sister Mirabella is only 21
months
older, so Lynam has her hands full. Mirabella is trying to adjust to
sharing
her mommy. Lynam works part time as an anesthesiologist and her husband
Gregg
is busy with his plastic surgery office. Her parents live nearby in Richmond,
VA,
and are a lifesaver when it comes to babysitting.
Thank you to everyone who
submitted notes. I look forward to
hearing from many of you throughout the next five years. Please
remember you
can submit updates and photos any time throughout the year to be posted
on our
class website.
