June 2001 Hello Everyone! As time passes, families grow... Congratulations to Eva Moy and her husband, Abdelghani Jaafar, who had a baby boy in December 2000. Fred Hernandez, currently working for Schlumberger in Houston, and his wife, Jennifer, welcomed Mateo "The Mexicorn" (part Mexican, part Nebraskan Cornhusker) Hernandez into the world in January. Felicia (Moss) Trachtenberg and her husband Ari Trachtenberg '94 had a baby boy in November 2000, in Boston, not too long after Felicia had received her PhD in statistics from the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign in August. Linsey Francesca Paik is now living in New York City and in Lenox, MA. She has a private practice in holistic health counseling in both places, but in Lenox she is mostly relaxing, enjoying being in nature and breathing oxygen, and driving. Rohit Gupta will be finishing his first year of his ER residency in Boston in June. Neshanic Station, NJ, is the site of Andrew Kraft's new home. He and his family (wife Jen and two kids) recently moved to the beautiful 2,700 sq. ft. "oasis" two hours away from New York City, where he is the CEO for Basex, an analyst research firm. Fouad Saad has left Boston after 9 1/2 wonderful years that began with his days at MIT. After graduating with a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and waiting (in vain) for a job with the Secretary of Defense to come through, Fouad will now be moving to Washington, DC, to work for Dean & Company, a strategic consulting firm in Vienna, VA. Sherry Lewis reports that she left the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in May 2000, and is planning to finish her MBA in Cornell's accelerated 12- month option program this year. She is looking forward to working as a Senior Consultant for KPMG Consulting in the Washington, DC, area beginning in the summer of 2001. Bonnie (Kim) Niederstrasser, who is currently living in DC, successfully auditioned for the Washington Chorus this season. The group performs regularly at the Kennedy Center and received the Best Choral Performance award at the 2000 Grammy Awards. This year they will be recording Stabat Mater and a Psalm by Dvorak, scheduled to be released by Naxos Records in 2002. They will also be performing with the National Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin in May. Bonnie would love to have visitors so let her know if you are planning a trip to Washington, DC! Jennifer Chow is completing her second year at the Wharton School of Business and will be moving to San Prancisco in August to work for Bain & Company. Before starting her new job, Jennifer will be going on an African safari with a group of Wharton friends and will end the trip by climbing Kilimanjaro. "Hopefully by the time this prints I can say that I successfully completed the climb!'' she says. She served as the maid of honor in Danielle Goodman's marriage to John Dooley in Washington, DC, in December. Danielle met John at Columbia Medical School and they are both currently completing their final rotation for medical school in Dublin, Ireland. Jeff Gonzalez is finishing his second year of internal medicine at Penn and will be headed to Miami for his gastroenterology fellowship in 2002. Recently he had the chance to visit Carrie Miller in Columbus, OH, where she is enjoying her new dot.com job. Porshia Parkinson visited Jeff in Philly recently, and is still getting used to upstate New York where she works for IBM. Giovanni Della-Libera is missing somewhere in Seattle, at the Microsoft compound. If you hear from him, please let Jeff know. Judy Gagnon is very excited about her new job with Caterpillar Inc., at their headquarters in Peoria, IL. She will be a senior environmental specialist with opportunities for travel and management. In July, Brad Brewer and his wife, Kylie, returned from Japan where they had been stationed with the Navy for the past 2 1/2 years. After about a month of settling into their new abode at his next duty station in Fallon, Nevada, Brad was selected for the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School Cooperative Program and they had to pack up their household and move again for the second time in four months! They are currently enjoying life in beautiful Monterey, CA, where he is attending the Naval Postgraduate School and pursuing an MS in aeronautical engineering. After completing his degree, Brad and Kylie will head east to Patuxent River, MD, where Brad will attend Pilot School. Over the Christmas holidays they attended the wedding of Rose Marino and Tom Hospodar in New York City and had a chance to catch up with a lot of their MIT and LCA friends. Wynne Kwan reports that she finally liberated herself. She quit her job in Singapore in May 2000. Since then, she has spent 3 1/2 months teaching English to Kachin Hill Tribe students in the rebel territories of northeastern Burma, three weeks attending a wedding and traveling in Pakistan, and three weeks in London, and Mallorca and Fuerteventura, Spain. She is now back in the United States for good, or until she can escape again. She is currently in the San Francisco area. Karin Lin received her PhD in Physics from UC Berkeley in May 2000, and is now a software engineer at Avant! Corporation. She is thrilled to be out of grad school! Having abandoned the Protestant work ethic, Matt Knapp is on a two-month leave of absence in Mexico where he is ostensibly learning Spanish, but mostly just bumming around having a good time. He reports that the trip has been a blast other than that unfortunate incident where he got mugged at gunpoint and lost his camera, passport, and other useful items. But he says "For all the over-motivated people out there, RELAX! It's worth it to hang out while you're still young ..." Since the column is rather short this time, I can provide you all with an update on myself. I am happy to report that I got engaged on Dec. 31! My fiance, Dale Poage, is a teacher in a Houston Middle School, but will be joining me in Tokyo after we get married in August. Needless to say, I am quite excited to take the plunge.... That's all for this edition, folks. Do send me tidbits of info as they occur and I will do my best to report them. And don't forget to check out our class webpage for important info: http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/l995/ Thanks! -- Ranjini Srikantiah, secretary, 12 Philo Curtis Rd, Sandy Hook, CT 06482 |
