May/June 1999

Hi Everyone!

We have a number of new beginnings in this issue…Congratulations all around! First off, I'm happy to announce the birth of Bryn (Mowry) and David Oh's '91 little boy, Braden Kwangbae Oh. Braden was born at 2:04 AM on January 15, 1999. Weight: 7 lbs. 4 oz. Length: 19.5 inches. You can catch a glimpse of the little one on Bryn and David's homepage: http://home.earthlink.net/~brynoh/Baby/baby.htm. Mom, Dad, and Baby are all doing fine! Bonnie Kim got married to Carlos Niederstrasser (Princeton '94) and changed her name. "I guess I got tired of having my old last name confused as my first name," she says. As part of corporate resizing, she was laid off from Applied Materials in San Jose, where she worked as a design engineer for two years but in January she and Carlos moved into a new apartment and job in Washington, DC. She and her husband now both work for Orbital Sciences Corporation designing satellite systems. Carlos is a senior systems engineer for one of their satellites, Radar-SAT, and Bonnie is a senior mechanical engineer in the electronics packaging group. She's glad to be in the satellite world, since she worked on satellites while a graduate student at Stanford. She also enjoys being closer to her family in upstate New York. She reports that Tyrus Hudson left Ford in Michigan for sunny Stanford. He is presently seeking his Master's in Mechanical Engineering and is happy to be close to his hometown in Northern California again.

Shraddha Dalal, currently in her first year at Wharton Business School, is busily planning for her May wedding to Ravi Munver. The ceremony is being held in New Jersey. After graduating Andy Laures started working at a division of Ford that soon became Visteon. He recently quit his job to come back to MIT for grad school in the System Design and Management (SDM) Program. He says he's "lovin' bein' back at the 'tute! :)" Erika Hanley is in her first year at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management in the Masters of Management in Manufacturing (MMM) program. She is having a wonderful time there pursuing a combined engineering/management degree. She is also engaged to be married in September 1999. Rama Chiruvolu is in NY and just left consulting (A.T. Kearney) for a new media startup. She has had a crazy three months as the Director of Business Development for a company called OurSquare (online community for Ivy League and other leading university alumni (including MIT and Stanford)). They are looking to raise some money and potentially go public. Colin Page reports that after graduating cum laude from Georgetown and marrying Jennifer Minnerly (Colgate '94), he and his wife have settled in New Jersey. Colin says, "I was lucky enough to find a job doing exactly what I wanted. I practice labor and employment law, representing labor unions and individual employees."

In Far East news, Wynne Kwan was back in the US for about 3 weeks for Christmas and New Year's and had a wonderful time seeing friends from MIT. She celebrated New Year's Eve with Melissa Kaye, Anuja Patel, James Clemens, Joseph Levesque, Sita Venkataraman '94 and Shilpa Gadkari '94. Recently, Wynne's company in Singapore was selected to conduct "A Study on the Identification of Investment Opportunities in the Manufacturing Sector in Dubai" for the Dubai Government. Additionally, they are in negotiation to do the master planning of an industrial park in Aden, Yemen in the Middle East, so it looks as if Wynne will be spending some time in the Middle East this year. As for personal travel, Wynne will be going to Myanmar (formerly Burma) for the Chinese New Year holiday (we get 2 days off for it). Future trips look to be Vietnam, China, Indonesia, and Philippines. Iliana Fujimori is currently at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on a 6-month stay doing part of her PhD work. Her advisor at MIT, Prof. Charles Sodini, who is an adjunct professor, convinced her to take a "grad student sabbatical" there and take a break from the harsh winters of Boston. She is truly fascinated by everything about Hong Kong, from the food to the shopping to the great transportation system. The university is located on undeveloped land right on the oceanside. In fact, she has been doing her swimming workouts right at the beach. [wow…sounds awesome!] Kenneth Yang is currently working for Olympus Capital in Hong Kong. Olympus is a private equity firm with $300 million in capital and invests in public or private companies across Asia. He left McKinsey's Taipei office as of June 1998and joined Olympus at that time. Ashwin Balagopal, a medical student at Mount Sinai, in NYC,is about to take a year off to set up a children's hospital in Cambodia. He's looking to link up with any alums that might be in the area, so if you are or you know of someone that is, let him know!

Jeff Gonzalez is finishing up his fourth year of medical school at UPenn and is awaiting match results in March. He had a chance to meet up with Carrie Miller in Allentown, PA. Bobby (Manoj) Wunnava did an away rotation in India, learned a lot, and will graduate from George Washington University medical school in May 1999. He will then start his Pediatrics residency in San Antonio, TX at Wilford Hall Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center, at which time he will also be a Captain in the US Air Force. Bobby reports that Sookyung Lee is very busy working for National Semiconductor in California. Shinya Fukuda is in Orange County working for Fluor Daniel and having a good time. Yvette M Croskey reports that she is still in Kentucky with DuPont as the Area Manager of a sulfuric and chlorosulfonic acid plant. Jocelyn Nee is continuing her stay at UC Berkeley as a graduate student in EECS, working towards a PhD. Her research is in microphotonics - a joint discipline project of MEMS for optical applications. She was gearing up for her qualifying exams at the time of her notes submission. Good luck! Also in California, Raj Sodhi has been working for Hewlett-Packard, Microwave Instruments Division in Rohnert Park, CA. He has also continued in his musical endeavors.
