March/April 1999 Hi Everyone! First, in and around Boston….I ran into Matt Knapp not too long ago here in the halls of Sloan. He is still working for Pioneer Rocketplane in Aerodynamics and Performance in Kenmore, WA. Nothing new to report, he said. Erin Lavik's first play entitled "Rose Leaves" was produced during Dramashop's Student Written One Acts this fall. The aspiring playwright is currently doing PhD research on spinal cord regeneration in the Prof. Langer's biomaterials lab. Eddie Kohler produced the event, and also had one of his plays performed. Another drama note…Josh Abrams, who is currently teaching and directing at Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA had his directorial debut in November. His first mainstage production there was of Bertolt Brecht's first play, Drums in the Night, in honor of the 100th anniversary of Brecht's birth. After two years in consulting, Doug Schreiber has switched jobs to learn more about the world of finance. Although he had intended to move back to New York, he got an opportunity he couldn't pass up and in September started up at Bain Capital in Boston. He will be spending half his time working for the $1.5B leveraged buyout fund and the other half playing the stock market for Bain Capital's recently established hedge fund. Richard Davis submitted his "tidbit" of news…He just left U.C. Berkeley, moved to Boston, and started working at a start-up called Virtual Ink Corporation founded by another MIT alum, Yonald Chery '93. He's living in Davis Square and loving life! "It's great to be back in Boston (I got tired of the Bay area) - N.B.: Richard, is that possible?? - and it's great to be back with all my old friends," he says. We also have some making a move to the left coast…After 2 years in New York City working at Morgan Stanley, Sabrina Bernold moved to Santa Monica a little over a year ago. She works at Hilton Hotels' worldwide headquarters in Beverly Hills as the Director of Corporate Finance-Mergers and Acquisitions/Strategic Planning. Those of you finance gurus can check out her press release ("I'm famous!!" she says) on Bloomberg in Hilton's news from early October. Garlen Leung left GE Corporate Research and Development during the summer of 1997, and completed his masters at Cornell University by the summer of 1998. He is now in the New College Graduate program at Applied Materials "all the way west in California." He says he's adjusting to the high cost of living and constant sun and enjoying his new place in Palo Alto. After graduation in 1995, Xavier Leroux joined McKinsey's Mexico City office, where he stayed for two years. Last September he came back to the U.S. to start an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. His url is: http://www.stanford.edu/~xleroux/ "(the page looks pretty lame, but I'm still working on it)" Feel free to ask our web guru, Stefanie Moses for advice, Xavier! In the medical scene, Jeff Gonzalez is finishing up his 4th year of medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and is currently applying for internal medicine programs. Good luck to the rest of you who are gearing up for the matching process…. Now with the wedding report….Lizette Arce and Prashant Doshi tied the knot on October 11, 1998, 6 years from the day they came together in Montreal during a Columbus Day roadtrip from MIT. They had a wonderful wedding & reception in South Texas, with MIT alums from the four corners of the States and guests from around the world. It was an exciting three day affair, starting with a party at the long bar of Blanca White's in Matamoros, Mexico. Let's just say some MIT folks had a difficult time re-entering the U.S.! The next day, there was another fiesta at the home of the Best Man & Matron of Honor, filled with great company, lots of laughs, excellent Mexican food, and plenty of margaritas and tequila to go around! Sunday was the big day...as the bride and groom were running around taking care of last minute details, the guests enjoyed a warm day of sun, surf, and pool-lounging. The wedding was beautiful and the reception on South Padre Island was kicking until 3 am! Lizette & Prashant extend their warmest thanks to all of their MIT friends who joined them on this special occasion, including Ken Justin '93, Kerry Rosenhagen '93, Javier Quintero '97, Alan Chabbra '98, Michael Hermus '94, Kimani Clark '94, and of course, the members of their own favorite class of 1995, Sabrina Bernold, Meelan Lee, Edward Kohler, Thayne Coffman, Michael Daly, Mark Hartge, and Phil Nadeau. Special thanks to groomsmen Ben Ellis '97 and Brian "Ziggy" Starzec for all of their help! The newly weds had a second reception in New Jersey...this was entirely an Indian affair and the bride looked stunning in Indian garb. Afterwards (and finally), the newlyweds honeymooned in possibly the friendliest country in the world, the tropical island of Jamaica. Though a portion of their stay was affected by the outer ring of the devastating Hurricane Mitch, they had a wonderful time. Ya Mon and Irie! Katie Leo, who is currently in the Boston area, has volunteered to help organize our 5th year reunion. Thanks Katie! I do hope many more of you will join us soon! That's all for now, folks. Short column this time…keep those notes rolling in! Thanks! Check out the website (alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1995) and the conferencing site through ANS (ans.mit.edu/). We have multiple databases there…feel free to scan them. Signing off… |
