May/June 1998

Hi Everyone!

Good news first: On August 9, 1997, Jennifer (Long) Steele married Andrew Steele '97 at Harvard Memorial Church in Cambridge. The wedding party included Stacy Schlutsmeyer '94, Amy Hsiao '96, Randall Whitman '94, Alex Chen, and Victor Luchango '92. Jenn is working at Harvard and is planning to go back to school in the fall. Clara (Yang) Dye, who is working at P&G in Cincinnati, OH along with Jahnavi Swamy, and Brian Dye '96 where married in September 1997. The wedding party included Holly Goo, Jeanie Cherng, Jason Mueller, and a few other non-Class of '95 alumni. Clara and Brian honeymooned in Aruba and St. Lucia and really weren't looking forward to returning to the midwest. Holly Goo, currently in law school at the University of Maryland, and Matt Becker are engaged and are looking forward to a 1999 wedding. Sherry Wu is engaged to Robert Lewis, who also works at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC). Sherry completed her intern rotation at the US NRC, and is now doing technical analysis for low-level nuclear waste disposal and decommissioning of nuclear material facilities in the Division of Waste Management. Bob Kindel, who is now at Stanford, and Jessie Stickgold-Sarah '96 have also gotten engaged. After completing his MS at MIT, Pradeep Sreekanthan visited India for a vacation before starting his job with Microstrategy in Vienna, VA. While there, he got engaged to Sreevidya. He will be married in July 1998 in Bangalore, India.

In international news: After a year in Italy working for Ansaldo Trasporti, Michele Lombardi now works for Pirelli Tyres in Carlisle, UK, which he says is the smallest city in England! Eileen Stephens is now working for Guidant, a major player in the interventional cardiology arena, and plans to move to Tokyo in March for a three-year stay. Her position will encompass new product development marketing for all segments of Guidant's product lines in Japan, allowing her to be the main interface between physicians there and the engineering teams in San Francisco. Wynne Kwan finished working on a political campaign in New York City's mayoral race in December. Unfortunately the candidate she was working for did not win. Nonetheless, she had quite an experience learning about politics firsthand, meeting interesting people, and using her urban planning degree to give campaign issues a different perspective. She is now a Senior Town Planner for JTC International in Singapore, and is working on urban development projects in the SouthEast Asia Region. After graduating from Berkeley with a Master's in City Planning last May, Roderick Diaz went to the Philippines for a short time to perform transportation planning at the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. He then spent time traveling through the beaches and mountains of various islands in the Philippines, and passed through Hong Kong, Macau, and Japan on the way back to the States. Now he is in the Transportation Management Group of Booz Allen & Hamilton in McLean, VA. After living and working abroad in the Netherlands, Prashant Doshi and Lizette Arce have returned to the States. They are currently adjusting to the American way of life in Fairfax, VA, and hope to be visiting Boston soon.

Stephanie Ford has finished up her time at Stanford and should be back to Timken after the holidays. John Rodkin has left his job as an RF Engineer at ViaSat, Inc. in San Diego to enter the JD/MBA program at the University of Chicago. Edward Baltz is a grad student at Berkeley, studying Physics. He is rooming with Anca , who is working in San Francisco for a company formerly called ThinkFish (founded by Rolf Rando '94, Benson Wen '92, and two of their friends who went to RISD), which does non-photorealistic 3D rendering. Roberto Almeida has moved to Southern California where he'll be living with his parents in Garden Grove (near Anaheim) for at least six months. He'll still be working for Pilot Software, but as a consultant to their customers rather than as a developer. Dianna Goldenson has been working in manufacturing at Amgen, Inc., near LA for just over 2 years. In her free time, she snowboards at Mammoth Mt., hikes in the Sierras, and runs some 10K races. After enjoying the world of management consulting, Jonathan Lai has rejoined the ranks of scientists and engineers at UCSB in grad school (MS/PhD program for materials science). Also at UCSB are Alexis Black, Margherita Chang, Sheila Mathis, and Ben Yu.

Derek Cedillo is currently supporting marine and industrial applications at GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati, OH, supporting. He married Nancy Schwarber (now Cedillo) on October 5, 1996, and they are expecting their second child in June of 1998. By fall of 1998, Derek will be a graduate of GE's Advanced Courses in Engineering as well as the Technical Leadership Program at GEAE, and be awarded a masters degree in Engineering Management from the University of Dayton. Shalini Verma is now the president of the Cleveland chapter of The Network of Indian Professionals (part of NetIP-North America) and is on the launch team of the 1999 Jaguar V6 engine at Ford. Jonathan Hardy is a graduate student in computer engineering at Mississippi State University. This semester he is TAing Computer Science I, C++, and looking for a professor to do research with.

After completing his MEng in XIII in February, Neil Best spent three months near Seattle with a small company on Bainbridge Island that develops and delivers open-ocean net-pen systems for farming salmon and other species. In the beginning of December, he started his first "real" job at M. Rosenblatt & Son, an Arlington, VA based company of naval architects and marine engineers that consults for the Navy. He'll be implementing new standards for shipboard solid waste processing and oil pollution prevention. Anyone passing through the DC area can find him at 1400 S. Joyce St., #1511; Arlington, VA 22202; 703 979 0169; nbest@hotmail.com. Judith Castelino is at Princeton doing her PhD in physics. Kimberly Mazzocco is currently at Columbia Law School. Brian Davison recently graduated from the Submarine Officer Basic Course, which he took at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT. He learned about the theory, construction and operation of nuclear-powered submarines. He also received instruction concerning damage control and submarine safety. Back in Boston, Jeanie Cherng is working on her PhD at MIT. Jason Mueller is working for Braxton. Joseph Boerjes is in Cambridge, working for Sapient.

I unfortunately have to end this submission on a sad note. Manuel Cadena passed away suddenly in New York in late June 1997. The cause of death has not been officially ascertained (congenital abnormality), but was deemed to have occurred in a non-violent manner (he was out jogging and suddenly collapsed). The Manuel Cadena Educational Fund was founded in his hometown of Muscatine, IA, in honor of Manuel. The fund is an ongoing attempt at community outreach for educational endeavors such as tutoring and scholarships. Please send contributions to the Cadena family at: 1212 Iowa Ave; Muscatine, IA 52761.

As always, keep the information flowing!
