January 1997 Happy New Year, everyone! I'd like to remind you all to get involved with the MIT clubs in your area. If you're not sure if one exists, or you need to know the contact person, drop me a line or visit the Alumni/ae Services page of the Alumni/ae Association web site at http://alum.mit.edu. You can even link your own homepage to the alumni directory. The other class council members and I are trying to organize some events to help keep our class together, and they may be joint events with the MIT clubs so get involved! If you'd like to help us or if you have any ideas, please let me know. Also, if you're interested in being an Educational Counselor for MIT applicants in your area, contact the MIT Educational Council Office, 4-240, 77 Mass Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139, (617) 253-3354. We are also looking for someone who would be interested in developing a web page for our class. Let me know if you want to volunteer! Now on to the news....Congratulations are in order for Chris Schechter '94 and Bridget Banas. They were engaged in August, and will be getting married in June 1997 in Dover, MA. After touring Greece with Chris, Bridget spent the rest of the summer working unbelievably long hours at Monitor Consulting in Boston. So far she is enjoying her work a great deal and learning a tremendous amount about strategic management consulting. Another 95er working for a consulting firm in Boston is Sahana Sarma, who started at McKinsey in September. Mehran Islam is currently working as an analyst in the Environmental department of Putnam, Hayes and Bartlett, an Economic Consulting firm in Cambridge. He is living in Central Square with some friends from high school. Also in the Boston area, Ellen Block is working at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute this year while she applies for PhD programs in Biology. Alex Peterson was in the chemistry PhD program at GWU, but the professor he was working with transferred to BU. Since he enjoyed studying surface science with this professor, Alex transferred too, and is now in his second year with the same group but different surroundings. He just can't get away from Boston! Contrary to what had previously been reported, Andy Kim is not at Stanford. He is at MIT, working towards a PhD in Course III. His plan was to work at Applied Materials for a year, but he got a bit itchy to start his PhD, so he came back in September. He finished his written generals in June and has orals coming up in February. Good luck! Arun Thomas is back from his internship at Toshiba in Japan, and is currently doing his MEng in Course 6 while living at Edgerton. Catherine Preston finished her MCP at MIT in June, and is now settled in her "real world" job. She got a position at the EPA's Office of Policy, Planning and Evaluation, Energy and Transportation Division in Washington, DC, through the Presidential Management Intern program, which gives two year appointments. Sherry Wu is also in Washington, DC, where she is working at the National Research Council. Janet Wang is now working for Tencor Instruments, manufacturer and supplier of advanced wafer inspection, film measurement, and metrology systems for the semiconductor and related industries. After finishing his Masters in ME at Stanford, Warren Sze started working for Smartflex Systems, Inc. in LA, which provides custom design and turnkey manfacturing of flexible interconnect assemblies to customers who manufacture compact, high performance electronic products. Greg Spurridge is now working for Gordian Systems. Eugene Lin and Joanna Law '98 finished their cross-country drive in the middle of August. They stopped by to visit Scott MacGregor '96 and Karen Ho '94 at Swiss Bank in Chicago, and also visited the Mall of America, Mt. Rushmore, and Yellowstone National Park along the way. He and John Yu are rooming together in beautiful Redmond, WA, across the street from Microsoft. "Microsoft campus is just like college, but with free arcade games and refreshments!" he writes. Tabora Constantennia was hired by AT&T Bell Labs in Naperville, IL in June of 1995, but part of her employment offer included taking a year to finish a graduate degree under the funding of the company, so from Aug 1995 to Aug 1996, she completed her MS in EE at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She is now working on switch designs in one of the hardware development departments at Lucent Technologies (one of the companies AT&T Bell Labs separated into recently) in Naperville. Judy Gagnon is now settled down in Louisiana where she is teaching several math and science classes in the Teach for America program. She is also working with the cheerleading team and cruising the main drag in town. Ivan Gevirtz is teaching English in Ecuador under the auspices of WorldTeach, a private non-profit organization based at Harvard University. He will be there for one year. Stella Lymberis is currently a second year medical student at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. That's it for now. Send me more news soon! |
