Dear Marc:
I am delighted to report the Class of 1981 Scholarship Fund recipients
for 2003/2004. Askia Howell ’04 of Reno, Nevada, and Keith Durand
’05 of Houston, Texas, will continue as class scholars for the
current academic year.
Askia Howell, an electrical engineering major, is a brother of the
Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at MIT. Over the summer, he worked as a
field sales manager at Vector Marketing in his hometown. He enjoys
playing basketball and golf, fishing, and skydiving in his spare time.
His career plans include electronic design, management, and teaching.
Keith Durand, a mechanical engineering major, is a member of the
Chamber Music Society at MIT, and has substituted for the MIT Symphony
Orchestra and the Harvard Bach Society Orchestra. Over the summer,
Keith worked as a fabricator and welder on the Formula Society of
Automotive Engineers team through the Undergraduate Research
Opportunities Program. He is interested in music, electronics, antique
car restoration, engine management, and machining. His career plans
include industry and teaching.
As you know, support from the Class of 1981 helps MIT maintain its
commitment to admitting the best and brightest students, regardless of
need. On behalf of the Alumni Association and the Institute, I send
sincere thanks for the Class of 1981’s contributions to this fund.
If you want more information or if you would like to meet with Askia or
Keith, please let me know. Thank you again for your support.
Sincerely,
Monica L. Ellis ’91
