Dear Marc:
I am delighted to report the Class of 1981 Student Financial Aid
awardees for 2001/2002. Askia Howell ’04 of Oviedo, Florida will
continue as a class scholar while Keith Durand ’05 of Houston,
Texas has been selected as the new scholar for this year.
Keith Durand ’05, who plans to major in engineering, graduated
from Spring Weeds High School in June. He belongs to the Boy Scouts,
and is a member of the Houston Youth Symphony Band. Keith also has been
a Red Cross volunteer, a member of the National Honor Society and has
participated in the academic decathlon with his school. His interests
include restoration of a 1956 Chevy truck and building Tesla coils.
Askia Howell ’04, who is majoring in electrical engineering and
computer science, is a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and lives
at the house where he serves as athletic chair. His interests include
basketball, baseball, football, and golf and he plays intramural
sports. Askia is also a community service volunteer. He plans a career
in engineering and works in a supermarket near his home in the summer.
As you know, support from the Class of 1981 helps MIT maintain its
commitment to admitting the best and brightest, regardless of need. On
behalf of the Alumni Association and the Institute, I send sincere
thanks for the Class of 1981’s contributions to this fund.
