Class of 1979 Scholarship Recipients

The 2004/2005 recipients of the Class of 1979 Student Aid Fund scholarships have just been announced.  Philip Garcia of El Paso, Texas has been selected as a new scholar, while Carissa Moore of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Andrew Campanella of Webster, New York will continue as class scholars.

Philip Garcia '08 was captain of the debate team in high school and was named Impromptu State Champion.  He also served as vice president of his senior class and on the executive board of the Student Council.  He has worked during the summer and the academic year as a fitness trainer for the local YMCA.  Now that he is at MIT, he is considering a major in mechanical engineering and hopes to row for the crew team.  His career plans include engineering and entrepreneur ship.

Biology major Carissa Moore '07 has already begun to compile an outstanding academic record.  Over the summer, she worked at Target in her hometown to earn money toward her educational expenses.  She is undecided about her career plans.

Andrew Campanella '05, an electrical engineering and computer science major, is the house manager and historian for Chi Phi fraternity.  He is active in research at the Laboratory for Nuclear Science through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program.  Over the summer he interned at Analog Devices in Wilmington, MA where he worked in product test engineering.  Andew's interests include playing guitar, chess and skiing.  He plans a career in electrical engineering or finance.

Your contributions to the Class of 1979 Student Aid Fund help MIT maintain its commitment to admit the best and brightest students, regardless of need.

Fun Times at Our 25th Reunion!

At the time of this posting, our 25th reunion is just over.  Speaking for myself and my family, and hopefully many of you, we had a wonderful time.  We renewed many old friendships and made some new ones!  We were particularly fortunate with the weather, which had been lousy all week but was spectacular on Friday and Saturday.   The rain even held off on Sunday for our class photo.

I plan to post all the pictures I took to the web as soon as I can get them transferred.  I also anticipate that we will be soliciting your feedback about the reunion, so please let us know what you think.

Reunion Attendance

As of May 14 (prior to registration deadline, so this was not the final tally), there were 210 total participants registered for one or more reunion events.  The Sunday brunch and the Friday evening buffet seemed to be the most popular events.

The Alumni Association has a nifty page that automatically keeps tabs of who has registered.  (You can opt out of putting your name on this page if you have privacy concerns.)

Reunion events were centered around the MIT campus.  Less formal events were planned -- the emphasis was on mingling instead of being served at tables.  Both kid-friendly and adult-friendly events were offered.

Pre-Pops Dinner, 5:00 - 7:00
Tech Night at the Pops (shuttle bus available), 7:00 - 10:00
