Fund
Johann Komander '10 (Greenwood,
Arkansas), a materials science and engineering major, spent his summer
working on an Undergraduate Resarch Opportunities Program (UROP)
project in the Supramolecular Nanomaterial Group. The project
involved synthesizing gold nanoparticle monolayers and optimizing
self-asssembly via surface chemistry. He is a brother of the Phi
Sigma Kappa fraternity, a member of the MIT Dance Troupe, and has
served as a teaching assistant at a program for high school sstudents
called the Research Science Institute. Johann's hobbies include
soccer, sailing, biking, reading, and traveling, and he plans a career
in nanotechnology.
In high
school, Syed Hassan '10
(Dhaka, Bangladesh) was a member of the cricket team and a volunteer
tutor to other high school students. He initiated fundraising
programs for those affected by the flooding in 2004, as well as the
drought in 2005. He enjoys learning to play guitar, collecting
coins, cricket, and travelling in his spare time. Syed is
interested in studying electrical engineering at MIT and plans a career
in engineering or business.
Civil
engineering major Leslie Sprague '09
(Augusta, Georgia) is a member of MIT's women's varsity openweight crew
team, a sister of Kappa Sigma sorority and a representative to the
Panhellenic Council for Kappa Sigma. Leslie also works as a tutor
and grader for an introductory physics class. Her career plans
include architecture and working in the construction industry.
Continuing
recipient Angela Kilby ’07
(Fairview,
North Carolina) is an
economics and political science major. She participated in two
UROP projects: one studying civil conflict and development economics, and the
other studying the effectiveness of aid in the Poverty Action Lab under
visiting scholar Ben Olken. She is a
member of the varsity crew team and a volunteer in the Boston Public
Schools. Angela plans a career in the field of public policy and
administration or development, with a particulae interest in working at
the World Bank or the International Monetary fund.
