Classmates Planning to Attend the Reunion

The Current Confirmed list of Classmates Attending the Reunion .
As one who is always on the alert for a better deal, I've booked 3 nights at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Memorial Drive for $179/night. You pay $275 if you say you are from MIT, but if you ask for the best rates or reserve directly on their web site it's $179. At least it was a few days ago. With tax, that's over $90 less per night than at Hotel@MIT. Check it out.

The walk along the Charles is very pleasant on a warm June night.

I think I may have already told you of my intention to participate in this year's reunion row. By way of confirmation, I have airline tickets (self and spouse), hotel reservations (Hyatt), and have been erging daily for the last couple of months (I volunteer as an ass't crew coach at a Ft. Lauderdale prep school and wait until all the kids have gone!)

I have garnered a half-dozen or so outings in a single scull in the past couple of years and will get some on the water time in a four or eight this Spring. All of this was inspired by reading of your 35th reunion row a year or so ago.

Hoping to be able to win a seat in June,

Murray Morton
Coral Springs, FL

I was a food ingredients broker, selling bulk ingredients to food processors. I recently sold my business, so I am either unemployed or retired depending on how you look at it.

My wife, Dee, and I plan to attend the 40th Reunion.

We look forward to attending.

Regards,

Tony Geisler

Winter 2003

Winter 2003

Dear Classmate:

Happy New Year! Our 40th reunion is fast approaching! Mark your calendar and join us in Cambridge, Friday, June 6 through Sunday, June 8, 2003.

Whether this is your first chance to attend a reunion or you are an experienced reunion attendee, you won’t want to miss the festivities. Our reunion will include something for everyone, from special class events to MIT’s unique reunion traditions. Reunions provide a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends, make new ones and rediscover the Institute. Registration materials will be mailed in March, but here is a preview of Tech Reunions 2003:

FRIDAY, JUNE 6:

Tours and Activities - highlighting what’s new at MIT

1963 Dinner with President Vest – Meet the president of MIT, and enjoy Dinner and dancing at the elegant Hotel@MIT.

SATURDAY, JUNE 7:

Technology Day - “Fast Times at MIT: What's New, What's Next--Now What?”

1963 Box Lunch – An informal picnic-style lunch at the stunning new “Z-center”(Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center), in the heart of the Technology Day events.

Tech Night Dinner – Seated with your classmates, enjoy Dinner and a program that includes Reunion Gift announcements

Tech Night at the Pops – MIT alumni, guests, graduating seniors come together for an exclusive concert

SUNDAY, JUNE 8:

Reunion Row - Alumni compete by reunion class to claim the Reunion Row Bowl

1963 Brunch at the Faculty Club – A final get-together overlooking Boston and the Charles

Tech Challenge Games – Classes compete in an MIT Olympiad

If you haven’t already done so, I urge you to make your hotel arrangements. Hotel rooms book quickly because of Commencement and alumni activities at both MIT and Harvard that weekend. Our class has reserved a special room block at the Hotel@MIT (formerly known as the University Park Hotel) located just off campus. To reserve a room in our block, you must contact the hotel directly at 617-577-0200 or via email at <reservations@hotelatmit.com> and request a room in the MIT Alumni Reunions 2003 Class of 1963 block. Reservations must be made by May 4, 2003.  Space is limited. In addition, dorm rooms will also be available. Details will be included with your March registration materials.

For more information on the reunion schedule, as well as accommodations, childcare, and travel, you can visit the Tech Reunions web site, http://web.mit.edu/alum/connect/reunions/. This information will be updated regularly as reunions get closer. Reunion questions can also be answered by contacting the Reunions Office via e-mail: reunions@mit.edu, phone: 617-253-8224 or fax: 617-258-7886. For the latest Class of 1963 news and information visit our class web site at http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1963/.

Especially for the Class of ’63, enclosed please find a CD-ROM to serve as a video and pictorial reunion invitation. It contains classmate Ron Young's movie of our 5th reunion, a class photo of our 35th, and excerpts from the Reunion Row video at our 35th.  It then goes on to "show and tell" about important research, education, buildings and student life at MIT today.

Our class needs your support! Class dues provide important funding for class activities, including our reunion. They help to reduce our class expenses and provide many “extras”. This year we are asking for $40 in class dues. Please make checks payable to MIT Class of 1963 and forward them to our class treasurer, Steve Bernstein, at 330 Beacon Street, Apt 33, Boston, MA  02116. Thank you!

If you have questions, or are interested in working on our reunion, please let me know. My contact information is below. In addition, our reunion liaison at the Alumni Association, Anne Dowell, is also available to answer your questions. She may be reached by e-mail at sechrest@mit.edu, or by phone at 617-253-8266. Your participation is what will make our reunion great. We hope you will join us for a wonderful reunion weekend.

See you in June!

Fall 2002[amended Jan 2003]

Dear Classmate,

Incredible as it seems, our 40th reunion is less than a year away! The 40th is considered a major reunion, and is usually well attended. Come back to campus and celebrate with us: Friday, June 6 through Sunday, June 8, 2003.

Whether this is your first chance to attend a reunion or you are an experienced reunion attendee, you won't want to miss the festivities. Reunions provide a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new ones, and MIT's unique reunion traditions offer you the chance to rediscover the Institute. Tech Reunions 2003 will include:

Friday, June 6: Tours and activities showcasing what's new at MIT
Saturday, June 7: Technology Day and Tech Night at the Pops
Sunday, June 8: Reunion Row and Tech Challenge Games

Read more at: http://web.mit.edu/alum/connect/reunions/.

There will also be many events especially for our class. As the fortieth reunion class, it is a tradition that we will be joined by MIT President Charles Vest at a reunion event. He will join us at dinner Friday evening, and we will also have class lunches on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Registration materials will be mailed in mid-March, but now is the time to begin planning for your trip to Cambridge. Hotel rooms book quickly because of Commencement and alumni activities at both MIT and Harvard that weekend. The enclosed form has hotel information, and you can visit the Tech Reunions website, http://web.mit.edu/alum/connect/reunions/, for additional information on accommodations, childcare, and travel.

Our Friday evening dinner will be held at the University Park Hotel, making that a convenient choice as a place to stay. In addition to the general MIT room block, we have arranged for some rooms at the University Park Hotel just for our class. To reserve a room you must call the hotel directly at 617-577-0200 or by e-mail to reservations@hotelatmit.com.Ask for the MIT Alumni Reunions 2003 Class of 1963 room block. Rooms are limited and reservations must be made prior to May 4, 2003. [The "University Park Hotel" is the same thing as the "Hotel@MIT" listed in the enclosure on local accomodations. The hotel originally used the former name, but recently has been using the latter. It's in the "University Park" area of Cambridge, about a block north and a block west of the NECCO factory on Mass Ave, so it's within easy walking distance of the campus. You can see its web page at "http://www.univparkhotel.com/home/home.html". Its affiliation with MIT is perhaps exemplified by the fact that it advertises "Free high-speed T1 in all guest rooms".]

To quote an old cliche ... the more the merrier! You can help make sure all of our classmates learn about our reunion plans. Enclosed is a list of classmates we are currently unable to invite to our reunion because the Alumni Association has no current address for them. If you can reach any of these people, please contact them and ask them to update their information by logging on to the "Infinite Connection" at http://web.mit.edu/alum/, or contacting the Reunions Office via e-mail (reunions@mit.edu), phone (617-253-8224) or fax (617-258-7886).

I encourage you to visit our ClassWeb page, at http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1963/. Explore the links on that page, and you might consider joining the Fortieth Reunion Planning Mailing List, which is becoming more active as we rev up our planning efforts.

If you have questions, or are interested in helping to work on our reunion, please contact me by e-mail to LJK@alum.mit.edu, or by phone at 508-358-2319 (evenings). You needn't be in the Boston area to be a member of our Reunion Events Committee, which will allow you to help further develop our reunion plans. Our reunion events staff person at the Alumni Association, Anne Dowell, is also available to answer your questions. She may be reached by e-mail at sechrest@mit.edu, or by phone at 617-253-8266. Your participation is what will make our reunion great. We hope you will join us for a wonderful reunion weekend.

See you in June!

40th Reunion Planning

Dear Classmates:

Please help us plan the 40th reunion of the Class of '63!  As class president, I've been granted a small corner of our Class Notes between now and the reunion.  The reunion will be the first weekend in June 2003, from Friday June 6 through Sunday June 8.  Hold that weekend.  Please send any ideas of any sort about the reunion to me at "mailto:LJK@alum.mit.edu".  Be sure we have updated your contact information, so we can keep you informed of events as the date approaches.  If you'd like to work with the Reunion Events Committee, let me know that as well. Even if you are not in the Boston area, we can keep in touch by telephone and e-mail, and there are ways you can help out.  As we get closer to the event, and our plans start to gel, we'll begin using our class web page at "http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1963/" to keep you informed.  The schedule this year is a bit different than it has been in the past.   The major dinner is Friday evening.  At that dinner, as the fortieth reunion class, we will host MIT President and Mrs. Charles Vest.  Tech Night at the Pops will be Saturday evening.

Sincerely,

Lawrence J. Krakauer '63
Class President and 40th Reunion Chair

Call for Initial Reunion "Events" Committee Meeting

From: "Lawrence J. Krakauer" <>
To: <>
Sent: Monday, June 17, 2002 8:55 PM
Subject: MIT Class of '63 Fortieth Reunion Planning (PLEASE REPLY!)

I'd like to have an initial meeting of the Class of '63 Reunion "Events" Committee, at MIT, some evening during the week of June 24-28.  We need to get a start on selecting and booking all venues that have to be reserved in advance.  Most other work can be done after the summer.

If you have any interest in attending this first meeting, could you please indicate which evenings are possible for you?  Just note "Good" if possible for you, or "Bad" if not:

Monday, June 24
Tuesday, June 25
Wednesday, June 26
Thursday, June 27

Even if you can't make it, indicate if you might want to participate in the future.  Also include ANY ideas you have about the reunion, even if you can't be a member of the committee.  Should it be on-campus, or off?  Should we plan some pre-weekend events?  How important is the cost?

Thanks.

- Larry Krakauer
- President, Class of '63

Some additional info, if you're willing to read on:

This Reunion "Events" Committee has nothing to do with fund raising. There's an entirely separate "Reunion Gift Committee" to deal with that, being ably chaired by Bob Johnson.  Our committee will do NO fund raising, and the reunion itself is NOT about fund raising.  It's about coming together to renew old acquaintances and have a good time.  I'm sure MIT will hit you up for a contribution whether you come to the reunion or not.

Any class member, or spouse or friend of a class member for that matter, is welcome to be on the Reunion Committee.  The best reunion committees are large ones, on the theory that "many hands make light work" (and the Alumni Association helps out a lot).  The Class of '63 has traditionally found many people interested in taking an active role in reunion planning, and I hope that this time won't be any different.  Although this initial e-mail is just going to people in the Boston area, I think that through the magic of modern communications (telephone and e-mail), we ought to be able to engage people outside of this geographical area in the work of the committee as well.

The remainder of this message is just to let you know the basic (tentative) schedule of the reunion, which is quite different this year than it has been in the past.  Note that one of the choices we could make would be to have some optional pre-weekend events.

Reunion Committee First Meeting Announcement

The first meeting of the Class of '63 Reunion "Events" Committee will take place:

Date: Thursday, June 27
Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Place: MIT Room 4-206

We'll discuss the general form of our upcoming 40th reunion, and get an early start on choosing a venue for the major dinner, the 40th Reunion Dinner with president and Mrs. Vest. Please reply if you intend to come on Thursday, so I can get a rough count (but even if you can't commit now, show up anyway).

Thursday proved to be best day for the largest number of respondants. We'd still like to have you on the committee even if you can't make this first meeting. I also anticipate having non-local committee members who keep in touch by e-mail and telephone.

If you're NOT interested in keeping up with the work of the committee, let me know (if you haven't already done so), and I'll take you off the committee's mailing list. I'll presume you might still be interested in possibly attending the reunion itself, unless you tell me otherwise. I'm sorry for doing this as a "negative option", but I don't want to lose people who might be interested, but just don't have time to pay attention to their e-mail right now. So just click "Reply", and type "committee no, reunion maybe", or whatever applies in your case.

Minutes of first planning meeting, held June 27, 2002

The first meeting of the MIT Class of '63 Reunion "Events" Committee was held on Thursday, June 27, 2002, to start planning our 40th reunion, to be held June 6 through June 8, 2003. Those present were:

   Steve Bernstein (Class treasurer)
   Jim Hallock
   Larry Krakauer (Class president)
   Anne Sechrest (Alumni Association)
   Pete Van Aken
   Ron Young (Class webmaster)

Anne Sechrest of the Alumni Association handed out a slightly revised schedule for the reunion, and the general form of our reunion events was discussed. This being a fortieth reunion, MIT president Charles Vest will attend our major dinner, thus constraining it to be reasonably close to the campus. The Technology Day events on Saturday cause us to want to keep our Saturday events close to the campus as well. Therefore, this is not a year for our major reunion events to be remote from Cambridge.

Anne also estimated our expected attendance. The Class of '63 has 811 active alumni/ae, and typical attendance at a 40th reunion is 15 percent. We thus anticipate that up to 120 alums will attend some part of the reunion, and most will bring one other person, for a total attendance of 240 people. This number seemed high to some members of the committee, and Anne agreed that perhaps it's an aggressive goal, but thinks it is achievable.

Our most pressing initial task is to book a venue for the Friday evening dinner, before the most desirable sites are taken by others for the many events that occur in this busy early June graduation period. At our 35th reunion, 102 people attended the major dinner, out of 133 total attendees. Applying that ratio to a total attendance of 240, we might have up to 185 people at the Friday dinner. This large number limits the venues we can use. A number of possibilities were discussed, and various committee members were assigned to investigate them.

One possibility would be a local country club, which would need to be arranged by a club member. Larry Krakauer will shortly send out a mailing to Boston Area alums asking about any country club affiliations.

We'd like to decide on the Friday evening venue by the end of the summer. Other items that need early attention: deciding on any optional pre-reunion events, filling out the Reunion Events Committee, and tracking down "Lost Alums".

Ron Young has created an e-mail list to allow our classmates to easily exchange ideas about the reunion. It's called "plan1963", and it can be subscribed to from the alumni site, the "Infinite Connection". Go to the instructions as to how to subscribe to the plan1963 list.

If you have any problems subscribing, contact Class President and 40th Reunion Chair Larry Krakauer at  or Ron Young.

Request '63 photos; reunion planning

Planning for our 40th reunion is underway. We're currently looking for photos from previous reunions, for inclusion in a CD-ROM. If you have any, please send them to

Tim writes, "We can take scanned pictures, originals (I promise to send them back!) or copies that you've made at Kinko's. Please let me know if you have some photos, or if you can think of someone we could ask. We're hoping for a mid September mail date for the CD-ROM, so time is officially of the essence!" Digitized pictures can be e-mailed to " tpoisson@mit.edu" with a copy to "rey@alum.mit.edu".

There has been an initial meeting of the Reunion "Events" committee, and you can see the minutes at:

http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1963/planning2003.shtml#Committee

If you'd like to help out on the committee, or just follow the committee's work, send an e-mail to the class president, Larry Krakauer, at "", and he'll add you to the committee's mailing list. There are plenty of things that we could use help with that don't require you to be in the Boston area, and many of them are simple: finding lost alums, contacting members of your living group, or even just following our minutes and making suggestions. Now is the time to start influencing our reunion planning.

A reunion discussion list has been established, for public dialog. For instructions on joining, see:
http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1963/plan1963.shtml

Let's work and plan together to make this a memorable event.

The Class of 1963 web pages have quite a few changes. See
http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1963/ for a list.

In particular, please check the Missing Persons Page:
http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1963/missing.shtml
to help us find lost alums.

Note that you will be on the Missing Persons Page if the 'tute does not have a snailmail address for you. Update your contact information so you can start receiving your free subscription to Technology Review. Preferably, you can do this at the Alumni website:
