35th Reunion Planning

Dear Classmates:

Our 35th class reunion is nine short months away, June 4-7, 1998, and the
time has come to begin planning what we should do and how we can best
attract our friends and classmates back to MIT.  You are cordially invited
to a kickoff planning meeting on

Tuesday, September 23, 1997
6:00 - 8:30 PM
MIT Room 4-109

Of course, our reunion will begin with Tech Night at the Pops and will also
include the Technology Day program

The Alumni Association will provide a light dinner for this first meeting,
which should be an excellent opportunity for us to catch up on life after
MIT and to start organizing the best way to celebrate next June.  If you
would like to attend, please contact Robert B. Dimmick of the Association
staff, who will be working with us on our reunion activities.  He can be
reached at (617) 253-8266 or <fun@mit.edu>.

I hope you will join us September 23 in preparing for our next MIT
milestone and look forward to seeing you at the kickoff meeting.

Sincerely,

Lawrence J. Krakauer '63
Class President and 35th Reunion Chair

MIT Class of 1963 35th Reunion Committee

Our reunion committee has begun making plans for an active and excellent reunion .  In addition to MIT's roster of events including Tech Night at the Pops, Technology Day, and the Techsas Barbeque, 1963 will host a few things just for us:

* Friday night our class will dine finely by candlelight at Stonehurst, one of the last surviving houses by renowned Victorian architect H.H. Richardson.  We'll be able to stroll the spacious grounds at sunset and enjoy a sumptuous buffet, but the emphasis will really be on conversation.

* Saturday night the mood changes to serious fun as we dance the night away in the Pritchett Room at Walker Memorial.  Our classmate Jack Lynch has engaged a fantastic band, Jump Crew with Lee West, to keep us goin' with rock 'n' roll of the 1950's and 60's.

* Sunday plans two proposals are being considered:  an all-morning excursion to Thompson's Island in Boston Harbor, or a delicious breakfast buffet at the MIT Faculty Club.  If you have opinions, please share them with the Alumni Association staff working with us, Robert Dimmick at <fun@mit.edu>

Meeting Minutes, Tuesday, September 23, 1997

Attending:  Steven Bernstein, Bob Johnson, Larry Krakauer, Jack Lynch, Ron Young
Association Staff:  Robert Dimmick, Terri Flannery

Steve Bernstein circulated a financial report showing the Class of 1963 with a healthy balance of just under $5,000.

Terri Flannery sought assistance in recruiting a reunion gift committee chair.  Various candidates were discussed.

Robert Dimmick opened a discussion on planning class events by noting how the reunion schedule has changed since Reunions were combined with MIT Commencement in 1996.  Thursday is still Tech Night at the Pops, but Friday is now Commencement and Saturday is now Technology Day.

Some past class reunions have been entirely off-campus in locations such as Harwichport and Martha's Vineyard.  The committee felt that this year the reunion should definitely be held on-campus as classmates would feel a stronger connection to the Institute than they did in the years following graduation.

After extensive discussion, the committee decided on the following series of events:

* events will be included in the class survey to determine classmates' level of interest.

The address of Stonehurst is 100 Robert Treat Paine Drive, Waltham.  The telephone number there is (617) 893-0381.

Rather than have a class luncheon on Friday between tour times, Jack Lynch suggested that the class provide box lunches for a fee that people could pick up at their convenience on Friday.

For Friday night, the committee thought it would be best to have a long cocktail hour and a late-ish dinner (8:00 or 8:30), no formal program, and perhaps a pianist for background music.  Larry Krakauer will visit the site and report back.

For Saturday night, Robert Dimmick suggested using the Prichett Lounge for a dance, as both 1961 and 1962 have done in the past.  A post-meeting visit to the room was made by Robert, Larry, Ron, Jack, and Steve.  The room was approved, but concerns were expressed by Jack Lynch about the kitchen producing "upscale diner food" such as fried fish, fried chicken, and swordfish kabobs.  Robert Dimmick will work with MIT Catering and Jack on devising an appropriate menu and level of service for this event.  Jack will be responsible for arranging for a band.

The committee discussed a picnic outing to Thompson's Island or the Boston Harbor Islands on Sunday.  It was emphasized that the outing would be back on campus by 2:30 so that those traveling by air could schedule accordingly.  Robert Dimmick is investigating costs.

For the first mailing, Larry Krakauer will write a letter to be accompanied by a personalized survey similar to the Class of 1968's; questions will be more specifically tailored to 1963, of course.  The letter and other information, including who plans to attend the reunion when the survey results come, will be posted on the Web site by Ron Young.

Jack Lynch agreed to coordinate a 1963 crew shell for the Reunion Row.

The committee will meet next on Wednesday, November 19, at 6:00 PM, location , MIT Room 4-109.

Respectfully submitted,

/Robert B. Dimmick
