TECHNOLOGY REVIEW CLASS OF 1963 NOTES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER,1997 ISSUE
(Sent August 23, 1997)
David D. Claypool, X, wrote that he recently
joined Sterilox Technologies, a disinfectant company, as an Executive VP.
David is excited about working in this "fast moving startup company" and
says he has never had as much fun. Even though his company has headquarters
in Manhattan and major operations in the U.K., he is still living in Baton
Rouge.
Steven A. Evans, VIII, is retiring after
32 "exciting and challenging" years with Rocketdyne (now a division of
Boeing). As a result of his work there, he takes with him fond memories
of much of the history of the space program: the Apollo Lunar effort, the
Space Shuttle Main Engine proposal, the Challenger disaster, and the Space
Station proposal. He plans to stay active in consulting and teaching business
acquisitions and proposals and spend more time sailing and traveling.
I was saddened to learn that Stephen Swerling,
VI, died May 26th of Lou Gehrig's Disease. I would prefer to remember him
for his humor and some of the stunts he pulled in Amar Bose's 6.01 lectures.
Steve earned his master's degree in EE at Yale and joined Tektronix in
Portland, Oregon after leaving Arthur D. Little in Cambridge. He made his
home in Portland and there founded Mentor Graphics from which he retired
as vice president of engineering in 1995. Steve leaves a son
and daughter.
There are changes afoot for Technology Review. Starting
with the January/February issue, TR will be published bimonthly. The quality
of its paper and binding will be noticeably improved. The length of the
class secretaries' articles will be limited to 1200 words (this issue's
column is 367 words), but columns will also appear on a searchable web
site accessible only to MIT alums. There will be no web space limit, so
we may finally see the original, uncut, unedited, unexpurgated (yes!) versions
of these columns.
Let's hear about you! Keep the alumnews coming!
