TECHNOLOGY REVIEW CLASS OF 1963 NOTES JANUARY, 1997 ISSUE (Sent October
12, 1996) Stuart L. Cooper, X, professor of chemical
engineering and dean of the College of Engineering at University
of Delaware has been elected president of the Society of Biomaterials.
He holds three patents and is author or coauthor of more than 250 articles.
His research interests include polyurethane biomaterials, blood-material
interactions, and structure-property relations of polyurethanes,
ionomers and block polymers. Next year he will represent the U.S.
at the Korean Society of Biomaterials conference...*John H. Wasserlein,
II, forwarded an announcement of the merger of Fraser Paper, Ltd.,
Cross Pointe Paper Corp, and Thorold Specialty Papers. He is
president of the merged result, Fraser Paper, now one of the largest
producers of specialty papers in North America with a combined revenue
approaching one billion dollars and managing two million acres of
forest... *Claude Fennema, Jr., XVIII, was promoted to associate
professor in the mathematics department at Mount Holyoke College.
His specialty since graduating from Tech has been artificial
intelligence and robotics. Working in industry until 1990 when he
joined Mount Holyoke, he earned his Ph.D. in 1991 in computer science
at U. Mass. He holds a patent on a price label reader device...*Melvin
Stavn, VIII, was promoted to professor at Milwaukee School of
Engineering in the department of physics and chemistry where he has
been teaching since 1984. Earlier he had spent 10 years teaching
at the University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dharan, Saudi Arabia.
He earned his Ph.D. in physics at Univ. of Wisconsin - Madison in
1969...*John T. Flaherty, III, writes that he and wife Lois
moved to Blue Bell, PA about four years ago when he took the position
of executive director of clinical development at Merck. He says it was
bad leaving Johns Hopkins after 25 years. Son Keith is in his fourth
year of med school at Hopkins and son Mark completed his MBA at Duke.
*Stephen Markstein's, XVIII, wife,
Linda, recently informed the Institute of his death last January. His firm,
Shaw and Markstein is located in Manhattan. Regretfully, I have no other
information about him.
*David D. Claypool, X, writes that
he and wife Caly make their home in Baton Rouge, celebrated their 15th
anniversary, and have two children, Christopher, 13, and Samantha, 10.
He left Ethyl Corp. two years ago for the entrepreneurial life. Recently
he has been developing a new potable water disinfection system based
on some russian technology...What's with this Chernobyl sale (I mean
fire sale) of russian technology? Next thing you know you'll be
reading about russian engines being used in american rockets!...*Frank
O. Verlot, II, writes that he was recently appointed director
of business development and planning for UTC's Pratt & Whitney
Space Propulsion ops in San Jose. Recent activities include bringing
russian rocket engines and components to the U.S. Their RD-180 is
being incorporated into Lockheed Martin's Atlas IIAR. See! Wha'd
I tell ya!...Finally, *Dale Miller, VI, and wife Kari tell
us that son Sven, 28, was a Congressional staff member for
three years. They enjoy living in the wine country of Livermore Valley,
downhill skiing and ballroom dancing. They have seen *Mike Sheriff,
XIV-A, and his family several times. Dale writes (spells) that he
is a project engineer involved with microtechnology in EE at LLNL,
will move to DC to do R&D for the DoD. Sven got an MA and son
Hans graduated USAF Academy and flies the B-1B. Wow! Six munz ago
Dale couldn't spell engineer...
